Excellent resource on scaling, pedagogically written, deep and insightful

I got this book on the hope to learn more on scaling and dimensional analysis techniques. I already owned Pankhurst's and Huntley's books on dimensional analysis as well as Lin and Segel's "Mathematics applied to deterministic problems in the Natural Sciences" but wanted to get more insight into the group theoretical aspects. At first I hesitated due to the slightly high price for such a thin book as this but at last I decided to buy it. I did not regret it. This is a great resource on the topic of scaling, showing both the theory and deep group-theoretical connections, everything explained very pedagogically and in accessible manner. I also encountered for the first time the useful concept of intermediate asymptotics. Beware potential readers though, this is not a novel and requires serious effort from your side to grasp this material.

Dimensional analysis is a must for physicists and applied mathematicians, and is usually taught to undergraduates very concisely. This short book will take it to the next level, both of mathematical rigor and of physical insight. The book is built around some well-chosen and carefully worked out examples, each a gem on its own. A pleasure to read.

About the Author
George Sand is the pen name of Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin, Baroness Dudevant, a 19th century French novelist and memoirist. Sand is best known for her novels Indiana, L?lia, and Consuelo, and for her memoir A Winter in Majorca, in which she reflects on her time on the island with Chopin in 1838-39. A champion of the poor and working classes, Sand was an early socialist who published her own newspaper using a workers co-operative and scorned gender conventions by wearing men s clothing and smoking tobacco in public. George Sand died in France in 1876.

Fanchon, the Cricket, a Story for All Times

The book is well written and hard to put down. I ordered it as my mother- in- law's name was Fanchon and she had showed me the book her mother had read upon naming her in 1901. The book became lost when her belongings were disbursed and I was afraid that I would never be able to find it. On my first try to Amazon I found it and much to my surprise this treasure was reasonably priced. I have shared it with many of my neighbors who also have given it praise. I was so happy to get the first printing and not the later one in 1926.

About the Author
Betsalel Philip Edwards was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1968. A graduate of Boston University, he studied music composition, and then religion under Elie Wiesel and Herbert Mason. Moving to Israel in 1994, he attended Bar-Ilan University, studying music composition and Jewish ethnomusicology. His first taste of the depth and wisdom of Hasidism came from the late great Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, of blessed memory. He feels that he has no merits or awards of any consequence other than the privilege of raising a family and studying the Torah in Jerusalem. The translation of the Mei HaShiloach is his first publication.

Good Find

The Mei Ha'Shiloach is not a relatively popular commentary when compared to those commentaries written by other Chassidic masters. It was therefore pleasantly surprising to find an English translation. The translator (Edwards) sticks to a fairly literal translation of the text without offering a whole lot of explanation into the author's meaning. This is great for the passages in which The Iszbitzer (author of original) provides more expansive comment. For some of the passages that are somewhat esoteric or cryptic almost, the reader would have been served by some expansion by the translator. That said, Edwards did a fine job in bringing this hard-to-find but important commentary to the public. He does go out of his way to break the language down so that the comments are understandable by even the uninitiated without going so far as to alienate more experienced readers.
Finally, Edwards does provide some welcome historical context relating to The Iszbitzer in which he refers the reader to the translation of the book's original forward (also provided). Additional objective historical detail would have good inasmuch as that forward was written by the author's own grandson. But that's just being picky. All in all, this is a good addition to one's library.

Bezalel Edwards has done a service to the entire Torah- loving- through - English - primarily world by translating the Mei Hashiloach into English. This is one of the great Hasidic commentaries on the Torah. Many are those who champion it and find in it the deepest of Torah insights. The Ishbitzer in some ways has a psychological acuity which seems to speak most strongly to those of the present generation. Of course Rav Shlomo Carlebach repeatedly learned from and taught Ishbitz. So too did one of his greatest pupils , the Holy Teacher David Hertzberg whose profound insights into the Ishbitz were part of the Torah given over in his own sefer ' Pri Mayim Chayim' Bezalel Edwards shows a good command of the text. One would like very much however to see this translation printed with the original text alongside, a dual- language volume. Perhaps some enterprising publisher in the world of Judaica could start bringing out such dual- language volumes. Another candidate for this would be the Ishbitzer's great teacher, the Kotzker.Somehow for certain readers anyway the dual- language works add a dimension to our learning which having the text in the language of translation alone does not.

This is probably the most inviting, beautifully done, charming series of astrological books for children and their parents that I have seen. The illustrations are perfect and the text is meaningful and obviously written by a knowledgeable astrologer, with a great sense of humor to boot.

Each booklet contains a generic Welcome to Zodiac Zone which introduces the reader to a brief history of astrology. (Little side squiggles unobtrusively teach, such as "The word zodiac comes from the ancient word for "circle of animals" or my favorite "Psst! Looking for predictions? Sorry. The best astrologers know that the stars don't make things happen--people do!") There is a colorful astrological map showing the 12 signs, glyphs and dates, 2 pages of planets and even a few sentences on elements and qualities, all done in a very easy to read, fun fashion, good information comprehensible to the young and their parents.
