Lots of irrelevant talking but few useful instructions

This book is mainly talking about how important the data analysis is while containing little instruction about how to do it. It takes you forever to find the useful methods and approaches to implement the analysis. If you just want to read the story of the situation of the company before the data analysis is implemented and that after the data analysis is done, buy this book. If you want to learn how to do data analysis, find another book.

Drier than Wheat Toast but Still Good

It's confession time...I initially was excited about this book. I received it and then quickly realized that it was...well....dry. If you find an AudioBook version, go with that instead because this one is a bit of a 'chore' to pour through. Having said that....i find myself increasingly obsessed with the content. It explores the typical "Marketing" challenges - how do you effectively measure brand awareness? How do you deal with the aggregated complexities found from multiple sources of marketing? If you aggregate the alleged ROI on everything (tv, social media, radio, POS, mktg assets, etc), you'll end up with a ridiculous ROI that doesn't translate into sales because ROI has been evaluated & reported independently, as if nothing had influence over the other & everything existed in a vacuum. Can i take all the metrics to the bank? Nope but it's a place to start. But i love the fact that this author challenges us to confront the notion that Marketing is difficult to measure. And he clearly provides & highlight the key metrics for ease of use. Yes, it's dry. But, like wheat toast, it's good and good FOR you.

A good talk about data-driven marketing but operationally useless

I was a bit surprised to see so many 5 stars but eventually I found another 2 star reader among reviews and I totally agree with him.
At first you can be a bit fascinated about the author's talking about the importance of data in marketing and so many important case histories. I firstly read this book when I was still quite inexperienced about marketing and thought "wow this is a great book and finally something more quantitative!". But now after second and third reading and some another tenth of marketing books, I can say my first impression was really wrong. As the other 2-star reviewer said this book is useless. If your thinking, like mine, is that a data-driven marketing book should be operational and practical to be effective, expecially if your background is technical or scientific and "regression" is not a strange word for you, do not buy this book: you would be very disappointed.

Comprehensive, detailed, and scholarly.

I am not an authority on Eastern Europe; I read this book as a (very successful) undergraduate in social sciences. I enjoyed the thorough, methodically-organized text. Crampton divides the text into time periods or event trends, and examines each country's experience in detail. The organization is this text's strongest point. Its other great asset is the degree of detail. It combines a historian's "big-picture" view of trends with a nearly journalistic (I hope the word doesn't offend!) chronology of political events at crucial moments. This pair of perspectives, together with the fact that headings make it easy to identify sections for quick reference, made this a really good book for me.
Now the downside: all of this detail makes the book terribly long. The prose, particularly in early sections, is unnecessarily verbose and not particularly well-constructed. I am quite comfortable reading academic texts; this one could be better. Teachers using this text should include some sort of geography primer; I think that even if Americans were geographically compotent, we would need help with some of these references to non-political regional names. I do not consider this a weakness, however, and generally endorse this text; my course used several of these chronologies, and this was easily the best. If your students will read 500+ pages of rather obscure text, Crampton will serve you very well.

20th Century Easter Europe

I am an early modern european historian, the 20th century has not been a focus for me, however, Crampton's book has been a wonderful source of information on this time period. Understanding what happened in the 20th century helps those of us who are interested, make sense of the 21st century. Eastern Europe is a complicated area, to understand the nuances of diplomacy, the Austrian-Hungarian empire and how Russis played a part in the formation of WWI is invaluable. Well written, lots of good information and a great springboard for further study.

There aren't many quality books on the contemporary history of Eastern Europe. Crampton's book is one of the nice exceptions. It is one of the best books on the matter with a lot of curious details on all the countries in the region. I personally use this book as the main text of all my university courses on Eastern/Central Europe and the Cold War. The only shortcoming I can think of is the lack of information on the communist concentration camps in Eastern Europe and their victims.

The definitive collection of lives of early Carolingian rulers

Thomas Noble has gathered all of the essential contemporary or near contemporary Lives of Charlemagne and Louis the Pious into one slim volume. While the lives of Charlemagne by Einhard and Notker have been around for a long time in Penguin paperbacks, and Thegan's 'Life of Louis' recently became available in "Carolingian Civilization: A Reader" by Paul Edward Dutton, the new translations of the "Vita Hludovici" by the Astronomer, and "In Honour of Louis" by Ermoldus Nigellus, are are alone worth the price of the book.

Strongly recommended for those interested in early Carolingian history.

Two men are at a crossroads in their lives. One man realizes he needs to make adjustments. The other man is more resistant to taking action until some special circumstances. Introduce these two men to two women who are in London to change their lives and the result is a lot of fun.

Randall, the Marquess of Reading, is thirty-five and a little tired of the widows and other easy conquests in his life. He wants a wife and legitimate children. He thought he had a chance with a young woman but when that ends differently than he expected, his eye is caught by another woman. He meets Constance in the park and decides that she will do nicely for his wife. He becomes a little stalker-like in trying to find out more about her and arrange the circumstances to suit his needs.

Charles, the Earl of Wakefield, is twenty-five and taking full advantage of his title and money. He regularly has prostitutes delivered to his home for his amusement. When the madam sends a special birthday gift, his life is changed dramatically. Eleanor is so different from the usual women and he feels a sense of tenderness with her and a desire to please her. When he discovers her true identity, he resolves to make her his wife.

Constance is twenty-five and in London to secure her inheritance so she can continue to take care of her home and her horses. She is frightened of the future if she can't get the money. She is reluctant to ask her cousin for assistance due to their last meeting. When the lawyers give her few other options, she takes the risk. Meeting Randall in the park during her visit is quite a surprise. She is not looking for a man and has resolved to be a spinster. He works hard to introduce her to the delights of London and to the love he can offer her.

Eleanor is a young woman excited to go to London to participate in all the parties and fun. She is fooled by an ad and ends up at the mercy of a madam. She is terrified to be sent to the Earl of Wakefield as his present. Eleanor knows who he is and tries to flee without anyone else noticing her indiscretion but Charles is not interested in letting her get away. Charles can be quite hard to resist when he really wants something. He offers Eleanor beautiful clothing and sexual pleasure she never imagined.

This regency romance has the feel of as if many vignettes were layered together to form the story. You go back and forth between these two couples as well as meet other couples and individuals that they are acquainted with and go to for advice on their new relationships. There are couples that are newly married, new parents and even a couple entering into a ménage to protect his reputation and allow him to keep his male lover. The story switches narration often and it keeps it interesting. In the very beginning, the quick transitions were a little confusing to me but after a short time, I learned to enjoy the unique flow.

I really enjoy historical romances and loved that this one did not follow the usual template. There were all kinds of couples represented with their own stories to share. The characters were not perfect and had made their share of mistakes but owned those mistakes and did not try to hide them (at least for long). I smiled as the couples shared their stories with a real intimacy you don't often get in historical romances especially from the male characters.

It is a very charming story of two different couples meeting under unusual circumstances and embracing a new way of life. The men had enjoyed easy dalliances with women and finally meet the women they could see spending the rest of their life with and raising a family. It is the women that need more convincing in this book. They were expecting a very different outcome from their trip to London and have to be charmed enough to accept the love of these rakes. A unique style to the storytelling make this a historical romance that stands out from the rest.

Lovely Romance!!

I totally loved this story ,Randall is a rake of the first order he goes about life having fun in his debauched way but he feels he is getting old and therefore needs to change , after seeing his friends get leg shackled they are very content and looking forward to their married life. He feels empty and alone he needs to find a wife asap. And this is where Constance comes in, a young woman with a past and because of mistakes made she has become independent with a strong character who knows what she wants , her love of horses gives a glimpse of her softer side . Will Randall convince Constance that they are a good match, their road to matrimony wasn't as easy but can love pave the way?
Charles the Earl of Wakefield is a younger version of Randall , he has an agreement with a madam to send him nightly entertainment from her pleasure house . Along comes Eleanor, she's tricked by the madam and lured to her establishment, she is sent to Charles as his birthday present. Unbeknown to him she is a virgin and frightened out of her wits but doesn't display her fear. Charles feels an attraction to Eleanor that he can't understand . After ruining her he decides to keep her she was his birthday present after all . He likes the way she makes him feel it's a new feeling for him . After realizing what has happened to her Eleanor tries to resist Charles when he proposes marriage but finds it difficult. Can they have their happily ever after considering the choices they made? I love the writing style of Linda Rae Sande she has a way of keeping you involved with the characters till your done . I definitely recommend her books!!!

What I like about Ms. Sande is that she has a style that is unlike anyone else. Her stories are full of sensual delights but also have characters with intriguing stories to tell. Is her happy ending lost forever? I received a copy of The Love of a Rake by Linda Rae Sande in exchange for an honest review. The character that touched my heart the most was Eleanor. She made some questionable choices but her pureness of heart stayed intact regardless of the heartache and despair thrown in her path.

Sergey Kosarevsky

Sergey Kosarevsky is a software engineer with experience in C++ and 3D graphics. He worked for mobile industry companies and was involved in mobile projects at SPB Software, Yandex, Layar and Blippar. He has more than 12 years of software development experience and more than 6 years of Android NDK experience. Sergey got his PhD in the field of mechanical engineering from St. Petersburg Institute of Machine-Building in Saint-Petersburg, Russia. In his spare time, Sergey maintains and develops an open source multiplatform gaming engine, the Linderdaum Engine (http://linderdaum.com).

Viktor Latypov

Viktor Latypov is a software engineer and mathematician with experience in compiler development, device drivers, robotics, and high-performance computing and with a personal interest in 3D graphics and mobile technology. Surrounded by computers for more than 20 years, he enjoys every bit of developing and designing software for anything with a CPU inside. Viktor holds a PhD in applied mathematics from Saint-Petersburg State University.

Well written Android NDK resource

For Android phones, while you can write applications entirely in Java, there are situations where Java alone does not meet the needs of your application. For example, you already have a library written in another language, and wish to make it accessible to Java code. This would also be true for portions of time-critical code that you want to implement in C/C++ or assembly. This is where “Mastering Android NDK” is a great help. The following quote from books’s description sums it very well:

“It covers [Android] NDK development from quite an unusual point of view: building your mobile C++ applications in a portable way so that they can be developed and debugged on a desktop computer.”

The book starts out with steps for installing essential tools and building popular C/C++ libraries. Then the authors take you through details on cross-platform networking, UI, audio streaming and 3D graphics rendering. The last chapter brings everything together with an Asteroids game with 3D graphics, shadows, particles, and sounds. There is an entire chapter dedicated to game logic.

I like writing style of Packt books so I know what to expect. The books packs lots of details and I would recommend it to anyone seriously looking to mastering Android NDK.

Simple, yet effective Presentation

NDK toolset plays critical role in Android development to implement CPU-intensive tasks using native C/C++ languages. While most of the literature available discusses the typical Java based development for Android platform, there are not many publications available in the market to help developers understand how to use the NDK toolset effectively.

The book ‘Mastering Android NDK’ collectively authored by ‘Sergey Kosarevsky’ and ‘Viktor Latypov’ makes good attempt in educating the readers the techniques of using the Android NDK toolset. This is a simple, well written, ‘No nonsense’ book explaining the developers how to use the command-line tools, building libraries, networking, working with OpenGL ES 3.1 to develop Game engines as well as effective graphic applications.

Android developers working on any of the popular desktops (Windows, OS X and Linux) will be able to use this book as it explains the readers how to use it on each of these platforms. From my perspective this is a commendable approach the authors have taken to ensure that developers on all these platforms will be able to make use of the book.

From my perspective the book is an asset to every Android developer, who wants to write effective, performance oriented applications on Android platform, as the book provide enough examples to supplement the theoretical discussion.
