About the Author
Marthus-Adden B.Y. Zimboiant was born on July 27, 1979, in Offinso in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. He completed his Senior High School in Namong Secondary Technical in 1998 at Offinso, where he offered Technical Drawing and Engineering Science as a course. He continued his Training College in Mampong Teachers' Training College from 2001-2004. In the training college, privately he studied Science as a course and wrote it as a private candidate, where he decided to pursue Mathematics at the university. Things couldn't go through, however. He served the nation for four years in the following schools: Sakafia Islamic J.H.S., Kumasi; and Christian Methodist J.H.S., Offinso, each for two years. While on the teaching field, he stood as a private candidate once again and studied Business Management, wrote it and passed with excellent grades. Zimboiant had admission to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (K.N.U.S.T.), where he majored in Economics. Whilst in the university, he was doing some on-line creative writing courses. Zimboiant surprisingly came out with No Grammar Tears Volume One in the third year and No Grammar Tears Volume Two in the final year. He also completed his first edition of the volume one in the same final year. Zimboiant is currently a tutor of Namong Techical Senior High School, Offinso in the Ashanti region. Zimboiant drinks research as daily beverage.

About the Author
Dr John Wensveen earned a PhD in International Air Transport from the University of Wales Cardiff and a B.A. in Geography and Transportation Land Use Planning from the University of Victoria. He is currently President & CEO of Airline Visions, a leading aviation consultancy specialized in the development of airline business plans. Prior to this, Dr Wensveen was one of the founding executive team members and Vice President of International Development at MAXjet Airways. He is a former professor of airline management at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and is an active contributor to the international media on aviation related issues. Dr Wensveen is associated with a number of industry associations and is a faculty member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and is an adjunct faculty member at the University of Maryland University College.

A Good General Introduction To Air Transportation

"Air Transportation: A Management Perspective" by John G. Wensveen provides a good general background in most areas of commercial aviation activities, including airline operations, fleet planning, cargo operations, labor relations, and more. The book is quite easy to read and comprehend, though it might not be as quantitative or detailed as some advanced students (particularly MBA students) would like. If you do seek more detail, a good place to start is Rigas Doganis' "The Airline Business in the 21st Century" and "Flying Off Course."

The book is strongest in discussing managerial aspects of passenger airlines, and explains the basics involved in fair detail (e.g. differences between operating leases and capital leases are discussed.) Other aspects of the aviation environment are discussed but have become outdated since the book was written as this is a very fast-paced industry and change is constant. Sometimes the book fails to paint the whole picture, and the organization of the book is occasionally off-putting. Of course one book cannot cover everything in a subject this enormous, and further reading is required to understand the more subtle nuances of the industry.

The book is good at explaining advantages and disadvantages of various components of the industry (e.g. the hub-and-spoke system) and generally provides good historical perspective on important developments in the industry (e.g. the Railway Labor Act of 1926.) The book explains the contract negotiation process in commendable detail, and does cite damages done by managers like Frank Lorenzo and Carl Icahn while explaining the concept of pattern bargaining well. Clearly, deregulation is front and center in the book, and while the book explains that airline service has become a low-priced commodity with generally low service standards since deregulation, the impact on travelers is generally overlooked. While it may be outside the scope of a book on aviation management, future aviation managers need to understand how far service levels have fallen and why.

On balance this is a good book. It tries to be unbiased (though it is obviously from a managerial perspective) and explains the fundamentals of the industry well. The text sometimes wanders, and is often rather repetitive: I would appreciate the book more if it were edited tightly and condensed by about 100 pages. Still, if you need a general overview of commercial aviation, this is a good place to start.

Poorly designed text

Plenty of good information for what its worth, but very poorly designed if you'll be reading most of the text. Each chapter seems to be designed without regard for the prior and hence they rehash tons of information you gathered in the prior chapters. I'd estimate that the book is probably 25% thicker than it would be if they didn't repeat information constantly. If the class picks and chooses chapters this format might be valuable, but reading every chapter for my class was annoying.

Daniel Mendelsohn's The Lost is the deeply personal account of a search for one family among his larger family, the one barely spoken of, only to say they were "killed by the Nazis." Mendelsohn, even as a boy, was always the one interested in his family's history, but when he came upon a set of letters from his great uncle Schmiel, pleading for help from his American relatives as the Nazi grip on the lives of Jews in their Polish town became tighter and tighter, he set out to find what had happened to that lost family. The result is both memoir and history, an ambitious and gorgeously meditative detective story that takes him across the globe in search of the lost threads of these few almost forgotten lives.

A whole culture lies behind the story Mendelsohn tells, and a lifetime of reading as well. Starred Review. As a boy in the 1960s, Mendelsohn could make elderly relatives cry just by entering the room, so much did he resemble his great-uncle Shmiel Jäger, who had been "killed by the Nazis." This short phrase was all Mendelsohn knew of his maternal grandfather Abraham's brother, who had remained with his wife and four daughters in the Ukrainian shtetl of Bolechow after Abraham left for America. Long obsessed with family history, Mendelsohn (The Elusive Embrace) embarked in 2001 on a series of journeys to learn exactly what had happened to Shmiel and his family. The result is a rich, ruminative "mythic narrative... about closeness and distance, intimacy and violence, love and death." Mendelsohn uses these words to describe the biblical story of Cain and Abel, for one of the book's most striking elements is the author's recounting of the book of Genesis in parallel with his own story, highlighting eternal themes of origins and family, temptation and exile, brotherly betrayal, creation and annihilation. In Ukraine, Australia, Israel and Scandinavia, Mendelsohn locates a handful of extraordinary, aged Bolechow survivors. When Mendelsohn was a child, his resemblance to Shmiel Jager, a great-uncle who died in the Holocaust, would make elderly relatives burst into tears. This memoir tells of his search to uncover the truth about the life and death of Shmiel, and of his wife and four daughters, by interviewing as many people who knew them as he can find. The result is a spectacular trail of discoveries, disappointments, and staggering coincidences which leads to Ukraine, Australia, Israel, and Scandinavia. Always aware of the danger of misrepresenting his finds—"How do you find out who someone was, really?"—Mendelsohn constructs an artful, looping narrative that includes elaborate digressions on such topics as the Hebrew Bible, Homeric narrative, and tensions within his own immediate family. The technique pays off, showing how the Holocaust continues to affect people who had no direct experience of it. A classicist, Mendelsohn cites Virgil's line "sunt lachrimae rerum," and comments, "There are tears in things; but we all cry for different reasons."

Heartrending And Hypnotic

This is one of the saddest, most heartrending books I have read in years. I could not bear to stop reading, even when I was revolted by the descriptions of torture and death that were visited upon innocents. There can never be too many books about the Holocaust, particularly in these days when some deny that it even took place. This one is especially important since it contains so many eye witness accounts from aged people whose voices must soon be quiet forever.

As a young boy growing up among his extended Jewish family Daniel Mendelsohn was mystified by the tears that broke out whenever he entered a room occupied by his grandparents and great-aunts and uncles. He looked so much like Schmiel, a man he only vaguely knew to be an uncle who had died in Eastern Europe during World War II. Fortunately, Daniel became interested in family history at an early age and began to ask questions and keep records. Eventually, as an adult, he and his siblings undertook to discover what had actually happened to Uncle Schmiel and his family.

The resulting journeys took Daniel to Ukraine, Israel, Poland, Sweden, and Australia among other places and allowed him to meet many former residents of Bolochow, the shtetl in which Daniel's family, including Schmiel, had lived. He interviewed witnesses to the deaths of Schmiel and his wife and daughters and recorded sometimes conflicting accounts of their deaths and those of thousands of others. At times the stories are repetitive, but they are no less compelling to read.

I liked this book on a number of levels. First, as I said above, its another essential Holocaust record and must be one of the last to record so many first hand accounts of what happened during the Final Solution. Second, the many characters are very appealing. My own family is white Southern Protestant for the most part, but I recognized so many traits we have in common with the Jagers, Mendelsohns, and other former residents of Bolochow, making me profoundly thankful that my familys'lives and fates have been so tranquil in comparison. Thirdly, the book is beautifully written, with the accounts of Daniel's searches interspersed with fascinating discussions of Jewish commentaries on the Book of Genesis. Highly recommended.

The best book I've read in a very long time

I could not put this book down for three days. Literally. I got food on it and bathwater and fell asleep reading with my head on the table at 3 am. I woke the next morning groping for it. It is moving and powerful and beautifully written. I cannot recommend it more highly and have already purchased copies for my friends and family.

A Search For One's Family

Mr. Mendelsohn has lost 6 family members in the Holocaust and has reclaimed their lives in "The Lost." This is not a dry, academic tome with statistics and analysis of the death camps. The author is a participant within the book as he successfully plays detective to uncover the fate of his relatives. The writing is nothing less than brilliant and never boring. He uncovers betrayals, sacrifices and heroics within the small town of Bolechow, Poland. Mr. Mendelsohn seems to have found every aged survivor from Bolechow -- this book is their witness to the Holocaust.

Rapey (Spoilers)

Okay, this one got really really weird. I can understand a romance in which the love interest has some darkness to them. The book is a fantasy, so I can see letting some behaviors slide that you wouldn't be okay with in real life. But the love interest in this book is a straight up rapist and I really couldn't get past it.

Luckily, the Beast never actually rapes the protagonist, but he gets pretty damn close. As her captor, he insists that she walk around naked all day so that he can ogle her. When she indicates that she doesn't want to wear the skimpy clothing he provides for her, he takes away all of the clothes she owns so that she has to be naked in his presence. Likewise, she continually has to ask him to stop touching her, constantly reminding him not to "abuse" her. Even though he doesn't completely rape her, his behavior is abusive enough.

And even though the Beast never rapes the protagonist, he does rape someone else during the book. When the protagonist attempts to get him to suppress his sexual desires, the Beast becomes outraged and rapes the wood nymph that lives on his property. This event is acknowledged as being rape, with the protagonist saying that the nymph clearly didn't want to have sex with the Beast, and with the nymph eventually becoming severely injured from the event.

I can suspend some judgement for a fantasy, but I can't get behind trying to support a person having a relationship with a rapist. Ew.

The book is excellent. the story line beautifully written

I have just finished the book and wish to comment. The book is excellent. the story line beautifully written. Very exciting and keep me coming back to read more. My main objection is that you have cut the book into 3 parts, part is to hook us with no cost to us, then you asked for 3.99 which I paid because you had me. Now I have paid 2.99 to read the end and find out what will happen to all the people involved. I have paid around 7.00 for a book cut into 3 parts. I don't know why but I feel cheated out of my money. When you come to a price for a product or a deal both parties should feel good about the outcome. I don't feel good about the deal. I feel used because in order to find out anything I must buy a new "book". MJ Haag you have used me for your own greed. If you want $7.00 for your book then you should of asked for $7.00 for your book instead of swindling me out of the money. This is a book not a series.

It's awesome

I absolutely adore this series. The first book had me wanting more but this second one has me ACHING for the third (and final) installment. I can hardly wait a month for it to be delivered.
I love the story line- mostly I love that the author has taken a fairy tale meant for children and woven it into a much more intriguing adult version. It's glorious, if you ask me.
The book centers around Benella and the Beast. In the first book we meet this author's Beauty and due to the world building and complexities of the characters, I couldn't help but fall hopelessly in love with them. Benella is a truly beautiful soul- I find myself wanting to be just like this fictional character that i'm almost disturbed by it haha. Any book that has me hosting every feeling imaginable is a huge success. This second installment has us seeing the interactions between our Beauty and her Beast and I felt it was so well written that I could actually SEE and FEEL the walls between them breaking down. It is slightly slower (and I do mean slightly) paced simply because a lot of it centers around our main character reading, eating, and teaching Beast patience, etc. Don't let that be a deterrent though, it's doesn't detract- only adds to the story.
WARNING: The ending is a total cliffhanger! And believe you me, it leaves you dangling by a few fingers!
I absolutely recommend these books!! Fantasy is my genre but this story is so much better than I had anticipated.... I read it in 4 hours, nonstop.
