Keeps getting better

This is a great guide to top trails of California. I like that the author combined the previous two books into one. It covers the best trails for all levels of 4x4 capability and is thorough. Closed trails have been removed.

I am not a fan of the spiral bound pages. They will likely rip out more easily. The trade-off is that the book lays flat on your truck/car seat to any page. Also, while this version has nice color trail maps, the maps no longer highlight the changes of terrain difficulty along a particular trail (from easy to moderate to easy for example). That was a nice feature of the previous edition.

Overall, this still is a great book and well worth the price.

Not nearly as helpful as the "CA Trails" series. The format is nice, and well thought out (section labels at the top of the page, lays flat, etc.) but, in my opinion, the authors wasted too much of the book highlighting SVRA (state vehicular recreation areas) and OHV (off highway vehicle) parks. This information is already plentiful on the web as the state departments provide lots of information and detailed maps for free. The whole point of buying a book like this is to find out about the trails that aren't already part of well established, state run parks.

In other words, the book is thin on useful information about remote trails and wastes too much space on freely available information about enclosed parks. Covering the entire state of CA sounds nice but it means most areas are barely covered, and especially when you add in all of the unnecessary OHV and SVRA information.

The CA Trails series is much more useful, even though you need to purchase different regional books. As a result, they are much more detailed and informative when you're planning an off-road adventure in a certain area. You get what you pay for.

It's an ok book. I guess there is never enough trails to write about so I was a little disappointed not at the writer but more at the content. I guess trails are just getting harder and harder to come by. I would recommend this book for the person just trying to start out 4 wheeling.

A fitting tribute to one of the greatest thinkers of all time

Anyone who has taken a course in macroeconomics knows who Keynes is. Economics is full of camps, conflicting doctrines, feuds, rivalries, etc. Keynes was unique in that, unlike other economists who are indoctrinated or are in love with a theory, he was never scared of giving up an idea that did not work. If one was to read his "Tract on Monetary Reform" one might be fooled into thinking that it was Milton Friedman that was writing and not the J.M Keynes who revolutionized economic thought with his General Theory. This pragmatism is what sets Keynes apart from every other economist. But why Keynes was so different from others is something students never learn. This biography does an admirable job of tracing Keynes' upbringing, his education, career, and contributions in the light of circumstances that Keynes lived through and shaped his ideas. It is also full of nuggets about Keynes' idiosyncracies which humanizes the biography and shows the real person behind the aura. The book is long, but 63 years of action-packed life requires such detail. The Chinese say, May we live in interesting times. Keynes certainly lived in interesting times with the result that this book is just as interesting.

Serviceable

This is what you might call a nice, workman-like march through the life of JM Keynes. It was a valuable read for me because I learned and re-learned a good bit about events on the world stage from about 1910 through Keynes's death just after WWII. I also got a tangential refresher on Bloomsbury.
As to economic theory, I didn't learn much. Not at all because I was already up on Keynes and demand management and such. No, Skidelsky is not a professional economist- he does not spend his days at the university commons or the IMF cafeteria, chewing over the fundamental ideas of economic theory. So it just hasn't sunk into his bones so deeply that he can easily state the basics in clear, complete and simple terms. Of course, this may chalk up to my shortcomings as a reader, but I was motivated and re-read carefully, and quite frankly the mumbo jumbo didn't always add up.
Also, Skidelsky does spend much time thinking about Keyne's sexuality. Maybe that is a wise professional choice in that it would have required a lot of ethereal philosophising. Still, during his youth, Keynes was a committed and in many ways open homosexual. Next thing you know he marries a woman and lives happily with her for the next 20 plus years. It points up some fascinating questions about the range of human sexuality and its biological and social determinants. Skidelsky doesn't really ask them. Too bad. I mean, I ive in 2016 America when so many people easily accept the humanity of gay people, and so many others are uncomfortable with homosexuality, and so much is in flux. It would have been pretty timely but Skidelsky stays on the surface.

A Major Force with Enduring Influence

In this, the third and concluding volume of his biography of Keynes, Skidelsky offers a brilliant analysis of one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century. Skidelsky offers a remarkable discussion of the man (as opposed to the icon) whose influence seems to have fluctuated according to conventional (received?) wisdom with regard to fundamental economic principles. Economists have either agreed or disagreed about the value of Keynes's ideas (often with more heat than light) since the publication of his major work, The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money (1936). As a non-economist, I have only casually observed how his principles have gone in and out of favor as the national economy itself improves, flattens out, weakens, improves, etc. I enjoyed this book because it connected a human being with the principles to which so many others have referred in books and articles. Also because, as international trade accelerates in terms of both scope and depth (largely because of the Internet and the WWW), the role of government in each country will inevitably change...especially governments in those countries which were formerly members of the U.S.S.R. as well as in other countries in Asia, notably China. Thanks to Skidelsky's book, I am now much better prepared to recognize and understand such changes. I wish I had read the second volume in the trilogy (subtitled "The Economist as Savior") before reading this one. Those who read this review are urged to do so. However, judged wholly on its own merits, this final volume (subtitled "Fighting for Freedom") is a first-rate achievement.

The Azusa Street revival began in 1906 when a group of Christians led by William Seymour began praying for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Within days of the revival beginning, the group would outgrow their premises, moving to the Azusa Street Mission centre at 312 Azusa Street.

From this humble premises God would light a spark that would fuel one of the biggest and most powerful revivals of the last two millennia. Through William J Seymour, thousands would be baptized in the Holy Spirit with many receiving the gift of tongues as well as divine healing and freedom from demonic possession.

Interesting Look Into a Controversial Man

William Seymour has his supporters and his critics. His critics call him a mystic, a man who sought experiences his whole life. His supporters call him a man who was hungry for God, tired of dead and dry religion. He wanted Pentecost and he wanted a touch from God.

What can we learn from these short sermons that he preached at the Azusa Street revival in Los Angeles in 1906? First, we learn that Seymour clearly wanted people to go after Jesus. Like Frank Bartlemen, he didn't want Pentecost to replace Jesus. Secondly, he believed in two works of grace following salvation. This would be a believer must be saved then sanctified and then baptized in the Holy Spirit with the initial, physical evidence of speaking in tongues. Thirdly, he believed this Pentecostal revival would spread to the nations which it did.

Overall, interesting to read his sermons. While not deep in their content nor long, they reflect a heart that, while not theologically perfect, longed to glorify God in my opinion. I don't fully agree with Seymour on all that he taught but he seemed to have a heart for God from these sermons.

What a treasure to have these messages! While they themselves would have us go further and deeper, the honor God Himself gave men and women like this speaks to the fact that we need to "honor our fathers and mothers." It is part of getting our spirit right before God. Asuza Street saw creative miracles. There was manifestation like over Israel - fire was on the rooftop, such that the fire department would come out. We need the humility of such faith, which overcomes the world, flesh, and devil. Where it challenges me and my intellect - that is just what is needed for more breakthrough.

It's a wonderful read of sermons from yester years gone by. Plea for Holiness and Sanctification. May we strive to obtain!
