About the Author

Michael Shearn founded Time Value of Money, LP, a private investment firm, in 1996, to devote his attention to selecting and researching stocks and private investments. He launched the Compound Money Fund, LP, a concentrated value fund, in 2007. Shearn serves on the Investment Committee of Southwestern University, which oversees the school's $250 million endowment. He is also a member of the Advisory Board for the University of Texas MBA Investment Fund. Shearn graduated magna cum laude from Southwestern University, a small liberal arts college in Georgetown, Texas, with a BA in business, with an emphasis in accounting and finance. He lives with his wife and two daughters in Austin, Texas.

Should be titled "Is Your Management Team Lions or Hyenas?"

To be honest, I really don’t understand these 5* reviews for this book. In fact, this was one of the more severe letdowns for me. I was expecting a check list full of both quantitative and qualitative measures regarding a business, but instead, the quantitative part is kept to a minimum, with the subjectivity of qualitative measures dominating the book. Now, just because qualitative descriptions are what the majority of the book is about doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a poor book; it’s the type of qualitative measures the author presents that really hampers it. Due to this, it’s unclear whether the book is written for the individual investor who wants to simply put more time into his investment evaluation, or for the professional analyst working at a bulge bracket firm.

As an example of the author not knowing his audience, he mentions in order to gain a better insight into 99 Cent Stores, he visited over *100* of their stores! Yes, you read that right, over one hundred stores. Unless the author’s firm was contemplating buying the entire business, there is ZERO insight a person would gain after visiting the 20th store versus the 110th store. Now, if you’re a professional analyst and your boss is paying you to visit all these stores, hey, why not? But as an individual investor, the notion that you’d need to even visit a fraction of this amount is absurd. Visiting as many locations as you REASONABLY can is a great method right out of the Peter Lynch school of investing, which I wholeheartedly endorse, but really, over a hundred locations? Come on.

Another instance of this lack of audience awareness is Appendix B, titled “How to Interview the Management Team.” Unless your last name ends with Buffett, Soros, or Gross, the average investor will never have an opportunity to ask management questions. Now, if this is for the professional analyst, this is fine, but for everyone else, it’s pointless.

Beyond not knowing his audience, the author spends 3 full chapters on qualitative measures to evaluate the management team, or 100 pages out of 320 total (approximately a THIRD of the entire book). I believe having an understanding of who’s running the business is a fine use of time, but the author spends several sections on themes that should have, for the most part, NO BEARING AT ALL on your decision to buy or sell a stock. Examples of these sections include “Is the Manager a Lion or Hyena?” “Is the Business Managed in a centralized or decentralized way?” “Does Management Value its employees?” “Does Management Treat Employees with Respect When They Lay Them Off?” (I’m not joking) and “Does the Business Have Identifiable, Shared Values?” Aside from these questions either being simple buzzwords ("shared values") or largely irrelevant to an investor/analyst, HOW is someone supposed to know if a business treats employees with respect when laying them off? Or whether employees all have the same values? (The author suggests going up to random employees and asking if they know what their business' "shared values" are. Again I'm serious here) I’ve never heard of a fired employee saying “Yeah I was laid off, but they were very gentle with how it was done, I appreciated the experience.” These three chapters read more like a human resources manual and less like an investment piece.

Now, there are some positive points to this book. The authors spends time on discussing operating leverage, which very few investment works seem to include. He also discusses “quality of earnings” (albeit in not much detail beyond “operating cash flow should exceed net income” or “watch for excessive restructuring charges”), as well as ROIC (but only mentions ROE once, so…) and how to gauge management stock compensation schemes. The parts on understanding the business from the perspective of the customer is also interesting, as it is the customers that ultimately decide how successful a business is. The industry analysis is worthwhile in that he discusses how to use other financial metrics that can’t be ascertained from the standard financial statements, such as revenue per hotel room or increase in same-store sales. Perhaps the biggest surprise was his in depth discussion of working capital management, using the cash conversion cycle. This part of the book is definitely the high light.

Amazingly, considering the book is written for the long term investor, there isn’t a **SINGLE** chapter/section/whatever on valuation! A third of the book on discovering the personality traits of the CEO (Is he a lion or hyena?) but NOT A SINGLE PAGE ON VALUATION (“buy cheap” is about as elementary as it gets). Unless you’re looking to do a character study on your favorite CFO, take a pass on this book.

Great methodology for investing

Anyone wishing to utilize a disciplined method for investing should read this book by Shearn.
Good investing mean avoiding mistakes and taking calculated risks. Identification of risk involves
deep thinking about "what can go wrong?". This is where this book shines, since it forces you
to adopt a structured approach of working through a checklist of the possible unknowns.
Too many unanswered items? - Take a pass until you can complete the checklist.

What I really liked about the book are the tons of real life examples of exactly what he means.
You look at investor conference calls in a different way, as it has an exhaustive section
on evaluating management and their responses. Are they honest? Are the overly promotional?
What are they trying to hide? You see real life examples of both sides - the good and the bad ones.

The book made me think of many situations in the past that were strong clues about excessive risk.

Another useful aspect of the book is that it provides many outside sources (websites, etc) to
check your facts. Investing in teen retailers? Shearn provides a number of free sources
to verify and understand trends.

I've no doubt that this book will make me better at researching a company.
For anyone not employing a checklist - the Shearn checklist provides a great template to success.

Fundamentals are more than a few numbers

I have to say this is a book that pushes my investing skill to a new level. If you are a short term trader that want to make some "quick money" in days or weeks this book probably won't help a lot. If you are a serious investor that cares about the fundamentals of the company you invest, then this book will teach you a lot.

I am an O'Neil style investor. Originally fundamentals to me are just some numbers: ROE, Profit margin, EPS, sales growth etc. Although this did not prevent me from catching some big fish like LULU or ALXN, I did miss several opportunities due to a lack of deep understanding of the business. Every time there is a sharp decline on heavy volume with no news, I have no idea what to do and the only conclusion is some institutional investors are dumping shares which is usually not a good thing. As a result I was shaken out of positions that turn out to be bigger winners for several times, such as VRX and QIHU this year.

After I read this book, I started to spend time reading 10-K and 10-Q which can give me a lot of insights of the financial health beyond those numbers. Based on the points in the checklists I produced my own checklist and feel more ease amid market fluctuation, because now I know the business beyond numbers.

Some book reviewers say the book is too much for them and I partially agree with that considering we are busy and have full time job. Some points in the checklist are too "advanced" for me, meaning the data can not be acquired easily by individual investors. But most of information are contained in SEC filings. If you don't want to spend time understanding the business, why do you throw your hard earned money into it? There is no free lunch.

Monkey King is a twenty-volume comics series based on the legendary Chinese novel The Journey to the West. It is a magisterial work that took seventy people over six years to complete. The San Zang who appears in Journey to the West is a specialist in Tripitaka, and is based on a real priest, named Xuan Zang. Xuan Zang lived from 602 to 664, and have traveled the western lands and traded with other countries along the western border from 627 or 629 to 645. More than three hundred years later, a story based on Xuan Zang's adventures, first appeared. The Journey to the West originated from this story. The Song Dynasty was founded in 960, yet because the only known author of Journey to the West, Wu Cheng en, died in 1582, during the Ming Dynasty, the story is considered the result of collective creation spanning five hundred years. The story also traveled through several countries and includes at least four different timelines. The events of Journey to the West, which include epic battles and threatened palaces and imperiled kings, could resonate with readers during almost any age, but the story focuses on portraying a peaceful society where deviance is ultimately trumped by enlightenment, violence defeated by benevolence. It is this balance, between depicting familiar events of conquest and telling a story about the search for truth, that makes The Journey to the West so beloved today. The author, Mr. Wei Dong Chen, is a highly acclaimed and beloved Chinese artist and an influential leader in the New Chinese Cartoon trend. His company, Creator World in Tianjin, is the largest comics studio in China. He has published hundreds of cartoons, which have been recognized for their strong literary value throughout the world. In 2005, he undertook the monumental effort of translating four classic Chinese novels into serialized comic form. After six years of great and enthusiastic work, he completed his dream, which now consists of 12,800 pages of beautiful drawings and epic storytelling. Monkey King is one of the four novels. Monkey King is a new landmark of comic artistry in China, and is a bold and exhilarating treatment of one of the definitive works of Chinese literature.

This book is a must read for those who have a Pentecostal or a Charismatic background. Or for anyone interested in an incredible story. The Happiest People on Earth helps the reader understand the power of the Most High and that he has not changed in helping those who seek him. The book is about how God led a group of Armenians out of Armenia so that they would escape the Armenian Genocide (the Armenian Genocide was the first Holocaust in the 20th century, half of the Armenian population in the world, at that time, was massacred by Ottoman Turks in 1915).

PS: This book is also a good read for those who are interested in knowing about Armenians or another fascinating culture. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. It truly is a gem!

This book put me on the correct path to a job I love.

I have an older version of this book. I'd like to take a look at the current version and plan to do so soon. I'm interested in taking another look because I have a friend who's interested in a new career and I thought this series might help him.

This particular book was the one that put me on the path to my career in publishing. I was lost, in and out of college, switching majors every semester, until I had to settle on one or drop out. So, I dropped out and got a "pass-the-time" job. While I was thinking about returning to school, I was browsing in a bookstore one day. Somehow, I found the career/reference section, and found this book, which seemed to be written just for me! I am a bookworm! It brightened my day. It wasn't so in-depth, but perfect for someone who might need to explore several possibilities when they are a lost soul. It let me a most important thing: most careers for bookworms start with an English degree. There I was, found. You may think that's common sense, but not all of us are common-sensical. Secondly, even working in a bookstore can get you places, if you want to move on. I got a job at a bookstore, I knew someone there with an internship at a publisher, she suggested I apply for an internship there, and I did. I now work there! Never underestimate the power of the book. Even one that looks like a quick read.

Many wonderful career ideas for bookworms

As a dedicated bookworm, how could I resist checking this book out? Authors Marjorie Eberts and Margaret Gisler provide an astounding number of careers that might appeal to those who love to read, from the expected, such as a librarian or book reviewer, to ones people might not ever have considered, such as becoming an indexer or doing government research. They also include interviews with various individuals about how they got their jobs and how they find them interesting. If you are a bookworm, there is certain to be a job (most likely more than one!) in here that will appeal to you! It would be a great book to give to a young person who loves to read, but is unsure what to do with his or her life.

Meh - useful but not earth-shattering

This book was pretty good, gives you a good idea of what it's like to work in literary careers such as publishing, what education/experience is necessary to get your foot in the door, and what the path up the ladder can be like. However, it didn't deliver any non-obvious suggestions for potential career paths. I did not have any "WOW, I never thought of being a ---" moments.

The collection expresses a mix of humor and sadness. Some of the stories are funny. In "Bridge,” the male protagonist, the only one in the collection, is a widower who throws himself on the mercy of three hotshot women bridge players. In "Night Noises,” a woman finds she has a real knack for inventing a "romantic” life for herself. At the other end of the spectrum, "Dust Catchers” is the story of an alcoholic at the mercy of an elder abuser. Although several stories take place on the East Coast, most are set in Northern California and several at a retirement community. Nancy Packer's writing is strong, concrete, and entertaining. Her stories hit the ground running, develop in a chain of consequences, and move quickly to their satisfying end. Many of these stories have appeared in literary journals including Sewanne Review and North American Review.

A Strong dose of Truth-telling Takes the Shine off the Golden Years

About ten years ago I sent Nancy Packer a letter thanking her for “Jealous-Hearted Me,” which had touched me deeply as it mirrored my own relationship with my mother, who at the time was a lively 85-year-old.

Last week I was at the library and from their mini-kiosk featuring short story collections I picked up “Old Ladies.” It touched a number of nerves. My formerly feisty mother has become faint-voiced and frail, unable to walk unassisted the distance between her house and mine just next door. She spent a week in hospital and five weeks in rehab after breaking her hip, so I recognized both the sad inhabitants of the hospital waiting room in "Regulars" and the denizens of the Triple–R retirement home which with its established routines and cliquesappears in several stories.

This was a painful book. Packer draws a detailed portrait of the end of life, when health and certainty and romance and friends are all turning to ghosts. These are cautionary tales, but we must all go into the forest sooner or later, though we know there are monsters.

eleven fascinating short stories

"Night Noises." Widow Louise begins renting out a room to men (Edward and then Leo) and finally a woman (Ingrid) as a means of companionship, but none match Ross.

"Her Men." Her grandson Jackie hits on Katherine to fund his latest "Big Chance". She has doubts as she lives off her money, but reflects back years ago to her twentyish son Jay and his then teenage girlfriend pregnant Gail before deciding whether to be the Iron Duchess or the doting grandma.

"Charade." Planning to sell the house with its bitter reminders of what was, Helen hires Eddie to fix it up while she reflects back to when she and Lamar were together before he left her. However, her flirting has both men upset.

"Two's Company." Rosa the short muscular immigrant cleaning lady and her employer Virginia the six foot slim with roots going back to colonial times decide to fire one another though each needs the other.

"A Woman and His Dog." Before going to the hospital where he died, Martin asked Lydia to take care of Ozzie. As they walk each day in different directions, Ozzie introduces Lydia to the neighbors.

"Bridge." At Ridgeside Retirement Residence, Norman the widower replaces the recently deceased Angela as the fourth at bridge with Millie, Jean and Charlotte though they ridicule him for stinking at the game.

These well-written eleven stories showcase the diversity of Old Ladies as each protagonist differs from one another as do their circumstances. Each of the stars learns you can teach an old dog new tricks when they discover something new about themselves.

Old Ladies in a new world?

I expected to identify with these old ladies--to be entertained and supported, but I was disappointed. Only one of the stories came close. At 74 I'm somewhere between practicing for old-ladyhood and being slammed into it. Maybe I should just shut up, and roll gracefully with whatever I'm dealt. I can borrow from their attitudes, if not their behaviors.
