Great recipes!

This book is excellent! I am a very happy owner of a Nutribullet, but most recipes that I can find online are pretty standard. They also tend to get old and boring quickly. This book is comprehensive – it starts off with facts about health benefits of smoothies, goes on to explain the best way to make them you’re your Nutribullet, and finally it groups the recipes by their function and purpose, such as recipes for a healthy heart, detox, weight loss, healthy skin, and anti-ageing ones to name a few. My favorite recipes include the Berry Medley, and the Chia Berry smoothie. I will try to make at least one recipe per day and see how it goes. First impressions on this book are great so far, and I am loving it already because the recipes are easy to follow, uncomplicated, and do not require obscure ingredients. The book isn’t full of pictures, which makes it easier to focus on the text, instead of being distracted by images, no matter how delicious-looking they are. I would recommend this book to all Nutribullet fans. It’s definitely a must-read!

One of my favorite Nutribullet recipe books

I've used a LOT of Nutribullet smoothie recipe books, and these are how my 3 favorites stack up:

Nutribullet Recipe Book: Smoothie Recipes for Weight-Loss, Detox, Anti-Aging & So Much More!
This book gives you calorie information (important if you're on a diet!), plus fat, carbs, sodium, and fiber. I like how it breaks the smoothies down into categories:

Chapter 3 - Healthy Heart
Chapter 4 - Detoxification
Chapter 5- Weight Loss
Chapter 6 - Radiant Skin
Chapter 7 - Energy
Chapter 8 - Anti-Aging
Chapter 9 - Super Food

I feel like the recipes would taste a lot better if there was more fruit included. Some of them are very green-tasting (if that makes sense).

NutriBullet Superfood Smoothies: 100 Mouthwatering, Ultra-Healthy, & Super Filling Smoothie Recipes
You get calorie info, plus info on which nutrients the smoothies are high in. For example: "Very high in Vitamin B6". This is super useful for me, since I don't get enough B vitamins and it can really deplete my energy when I'm low on them.

The recipes are really, really tasty. I also like how they have fun names like If You Like Pina Coladas... and Minty Green Goblin.

The recipes aren't broken into categories, which I would have appreciated, but that's okay.

The Skinny NUTRiBULLET Recipe Book: 80+ Delicious & Nutritious Healthy Smoothie Recipes. Burn Fat, Lose Weight and Feel Great!
There are a lot of recipes included that use ounces. For example: 3 ½ ounces of blueberries. I don't have a food scale, and maybe I should, but I don't. So I have to do a lot of guessing on these recipes.

There's no calorie info or any other nutritional info. More guessing.

However, the recipes ARE very tasty, and I like how they include plenty of nuts. You don't see that in many smoothie recipe books. I think a tasty smoothie is more important than nutritional info, so this is still one of my favorites.

I've lost 10 pounds so far on my smoothie diet (1 smoothie for breakfast, 1 for lunch, then a big dinner!) So I'd recommend all of these books to anyone looking to lose weight in a nutritionally rich way.

Author/chef Stephanie Shaw is an RN by profession but she doesn't stop with traditional medicine in working with her tong term patients: her specialty is diabetes. In her role as an RN has emphasize nutrition and exercise and a mixture of modalities to treat pain, stress such as NLP, hypnotherapy, TFT, quantum touch. This excellent book is devoted to her recipes for Smoothies that she informs us are for weight loss, detox and anti-aging and he r big secret is that she makes these smoothie with the blender called the Nutribullet: `it even extracts nutrients from the seeds and stems of the fruits and vegetables, and incorporates them in the smoothie. Proteins, vitamins, omega 3 fatty acids, and minerals, get absorbed in my body and give me an energy boost that keeps me energized all day long.'

More than a simple table book

Honestly, at first this looked like something you could place on a coffee table or a dining room table, then forget about it having guests take 5 minute glances at it every now and again. What I didn't realize is how well the pictures are laid out in the book, the quality of the print, and the overall pristine wonder of the photographs inside. It still isn't really something you'd read over and over again, but if you want to be inspired, love classic photography, or maybe want a quick lesson on beginning to use polaroid photography, I'd definitely recommend this product. And let me tell you... for the price, this is easily one of the best deals on Amazon... 10 dollars for a 350 page book filled with a short history on the subject of polaroid photography, and hundreds of stunningly beautiful photographs, I can't describe how glad I am I made this purchase.

Not A Good Purchase

After having immensely enjoyed an instant photography exhibit at the Ogen Museum of Art in New Orleans two years ago, I thought I would love this book. There are some interesting photos in this book but I am quite disappointed with having seen many pornographic photos in the mix. I had expected better things of this collection of photos.

It's Interesting

It's a neat flip through, but nothing too special. I will look through it a few times before it hits the shelves and collects dust, but I'm sure if Polaroid ever gets brought up in a conversation, I'll probably bring it out and say "Take a look at this neat book."

Other than that, I wasn't terribly impressed as the theme just seems to be haphazard polaroids. There is nothing wrong with that I suppose, but it left me desiring better.

A Great Adult ESL Level One Textbook

If you are looking for one book that does it all, this is it. Don't confuse this book with "Side-by-Side" just because it has the same author. It is an entirely different beast and everything "Side-by-Side" is not. I use this book as a main textbook with community ed ESL classes and as a supplemental textbook with some workplace ESL classes. My level one students loved this book so much that all the other level one classes at our site gave up their textbooks and switched to this one. It presents the material in appropriate, manageable chunks and it progresses through topics which are extremely appropriate for adults. It's organization is excellent, varying the skills used, and each lesson leaves students feeling like they are learning. This is a good general textbook including conversation, listening, speaking, grammar, TPR, and writing activities. It is a general ESL textbook and not a literacy textbook, however, so for students with low L1 literacy, I supplement this textbook with Molinsky's book "Access" and Linda Mrowicki's book "Pre-reading Resource Book". I have also used Mrowicki's "First Words in English", and "Starting to Read" (Linmore Publishing) as companion texts or as supplemental texts, depending on the class.

About the Author
Susan Bright is a curator and writer. She has contributed to numerous publications and is the author of Art Photography Now. In addition to organizing international conferences and seminars on art and photography, she was formerly assistant curator of photographs at the National Portrait Gallery in London, curator at the Association of Photographers, and served as acting director for the MA Photography (Historic and Contemporary) program at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, London. Bright’s previous exhibitions and catalogs include Something Out of Nothing, How We Are: Photographing Britain, and Face of Fashion. She currently lives and works in New York, where she is a faculty member at the School of Visual Arts.

Looking at One's Self

The photographic self-portrait is vastly different from the photographic portrait. The union of photographer and subject leads to an effort by the photographer to create an image that is more revealing of the inner aspects of the subject or offers greater examination of the milieu in which the photographer exists, or so I would conclude from "Auto Focus: the Self-portrait in Contemporary Photography".

Susan Bright, who leads us through this collection of post-modern images, has provided a useful text to aid in comprehending this collection of images from at least 75 photographers. Most of them were unknown to me, except for a few like Martin Parr. Bright has divided the book into five genres that seem to greatly overlap. Autobiography deals with the every day life of the artist. Body focuses on the use of the artist's body to convey a message. Masquerade presents the artist as someone else. The section on studio and album organizes around an approach to the self-portrait that is closely allied to traditional methods of organization. The chapter on performance includes photographs that seem to document performance art, although a few represent acts that were never publicly performed.

After Bright's introductory historical overview of the field of self-portraits, she provides some introductory comments to each genre and then as part of a two to four page layout, featuring the photographs of the artists, provides comments on the individual's work. If you are of the school that believes that the art photograph should speak for itself, without explanation, you may be thankful to have Bright along as a guide. For me at least, trying to understand what each of the photographs was about was a difficult task, even when I knew that each picture was concerned with questions like "what is the self."

There appeared to be few links between the connotations that the artist must have seen in their images and those that I brought to the project. Occasionally the images were so confrontational that it was easy to understand that I was being attacked, as in the photographs of the self-maimed body of Catherine Opie. Occasionally I smiled, as when I looked at the images of Joan Fontcuberta, dressed as an eastern rites priest, engaged in activities that were impossible, like surf-boarding on the back of a dolphin. Occasionally I appreciated the fine craftsmanship of an artist like Gaüeca who draws his style both from masters like Vermeer and from modern advertising. Mostly I felt in the dark when I looked at pictures like those of Nick Cave who hides his body completely behind an arrangement of flowers or handbags or blankets.

I realized that part of my confusion may have been because the understanding of some of these artists requires an accretion of many photographs rather then just the three of four presented here. Certainly I did not appreciate the first time I saw an image of and by Cindy Sherman as much as I did when I had seen many of her self-portraits. (Sherman is not one of the artists presented except in an historic context. There are images by Aneta Grzeszykowska imitating Sherman's imitations of motion picture publicity shots.)

I am not a post-modernist. The photograph that I found most moving and intriguing in the book was a self-portrait of Robert Mapplethorpe in the historic overview introduction, made in the year before he died. On the other hand I also believe that the way to grow in one's appreciation of the new is to seriously examine what, for the viewer, is a cutting edge of art. These images provided me with an opportunity for such an examination.

A Hero that isn't a wimp.

On the whole, I liked this book very much. Granted some of the minute descriptions of clothes and rooms, etc., could have left more time for the characters. I like the author's word-smithing - a high level. The heroine was a bit irritating at times, but I can't tell you how nice it was to have a leading male that acted like a MAN as opposed to a wimpy boy, or a hen-pecked fool. I hate the way real men are denigrated in our culture so when I find a character that exudes the kind of strength that shows real backbone I am impressed.

An okay read

First off-,the title was s little misleading- as they most often are. The book progressed extremely slowly in parts where the h's every action was told- she walked into the kitchen- she made coffee- she drank coffee- she emptied the cup (paraphrasing). These actions would be great if it led somewhere except her going to bed- alone.

Another really annoying aspect about this book was the H's ability to constantly provide an answer to the h's thoughts. She thought it- he answered her. Seriously?.

The H was okay but very overpowering and therefore very unbelievable. While his actions were always the protect the h, I don't see his dominance to be admirable. Especially when the h was coming out of an abusive relationship only to be completely bossed around and have her life taken over by the H. While she wasn't exactly a doormat in that she always put up a fight- it was always futile as he got his way never-the-less

The Segway into their undying love -while romantic- was a tad bit hard to buy into.

Overall- its one of those books that you read while forcing the pages to get better.

My favorite Helen Bianchin book is "Mistress by Contract". I judge all of her other books by this one and none have beat it, so far. Having said that, however, this is still a great read.

Rather Dark but Very Affecting First Episode in Serial

Be aware that this is the first episode in a serial story. If you find an (as I write this) uncompleted story frustrating, you may want to wait until more of them are out.

That said, this is an excellent beginning to what promises to be a somewhat dark but very satisfying romance. It's not a happy story at this point - I found myself badly affected by Skye's behaviors, trained into him by years of abuse, and the way that Liam is at this point oblivious to the depth of that abuse - which is a credit to the author. I was also impressed with the way the author sketched out Skye's fears and hinted at his experiences without falling into over-the-top angst. She does a better job avoiding overly florid language than I am doing with this review.

If she can keep up the tone and pace without making this into a mere quick'n'easy tale of redemption - and at this point I think she can - then I look forward to an outstanding story at the end of the serial.

it ends before it begins

This is written better than most, edited better than most and much more well thought of than most.
There is a problem though and that is its main character, Skye: as soon as he is caught, he loses it. Every trace of the self-determining, strong-willed loner evaporates into a submissive fool too afraid to breathe. He is not coping waiting for an opportunity to be free again, he just surrenders and that ends the story before it can begin.
That this is just a very short first (free) instalment in a series of very short (but quite expensive) instalments does not help any.

Don't expect a resolution at the end of this book

I wouldn't call it a cliffhanger, but there is definitely a book 2. It picks up where the first story ends. I really enjoyed this story. It was told from the perspectives of the two MCs. Initially it was a bit confusing because they think they know what they want from each other and both are mistaken. There is a lot of miscommunication going on in this story. Even when they try to have a mostly one sided discussion matters are confused even more.

We learn a lot of new lore about Alphas and Omegas. I greatly enjoy learning new things. I found myself rooting for the two of them, but you don't know what will happen. I felt so sorry for Skye the Omega. He was just trying trying to survive in a harsh world that kept him on the run and on guard constantly. His counterpart Alpha wanted to do what was right as he had learned in his pack, but his instincts kept getting him in trouble.

This is definite book for fans of lone Omegas. I can't wait to see what happens. I already have Book 2.

Quiet Horror, Loud As Bombs

NIGHTMARES FROM A LOVECRAFTIAN MIND offers a collection of fiction that utilizes the eponymous influence of one of the forefathers of weird fiction without sacrificing the approach that makes Jordan Krall such a unique and dynamic storyteller. The stories within manage to capture the slow, creeping dread of Lovecraft's tales without ever traipsing into pastiche, and each of the eleven tales feel vital and uncompromised with Krall favoring Lovecraft as an influence as opposed to a template. In abandoning many of the tropes and cliches that reappear so frequently in Mythos fiction, the stories breathe on their own without ever coming across as travels in borrowed shoes. While writing with Lovecraft in mind can be and has been done brilliantly by a number of writers, Lovecraftian fiction is not a sub-genre that lends itself terribly well to innovation with authorial voice. Here, Krall has created stories that feel both classical and contemporary in sentiment, cosmically grand and uncomfortably close in scale, and very much fitting within his oeuvre. These tales, as the title implies, are very much like nightmares, existing somewhere within the subconscious where everyday logic and the surreal mingle seamlessly. Krall effectively channels that old Lovecraftian fear and stays true to what makes his fiction stand out, and the resulting collection is one that will appeal to those who enjoy the weird, old, new, and everywhere in between.

Acclaimed Bizarro is also full-on Lovecraftian

Jordan Krall impresses me. Yea verily, I am impressed by Jordan Krall.

Known primarily - at least to me, for a long period of time - as a Bizarro author, which is a limiting label in my even more limited opinion, I find Krall to be a bang-up Lovecraftian in that new jack Subtle School, and therefore someone I see as essential to a genre often cluttered by too many Cthulhu cameos and robed cultists who all somehow possess a copy of the Necronomicon. The stars are always right, and everyone's favorite Great Old One is on the verge of rising once again to... do whatever he'll do when he rises from that watery sleeping bag, jammies all soaked, pissy as hell. That's Lovecraftian Pastiche 101. I've done it. Lots of us have. Jordan Krall could teach that class, if he wasn't already admitted into the Miskatonic Graduate Program, where all the banners have been removed from the wall, and only those who are attending know on which campus they really are.

In his recent novella, Nightmares of a Lovecraftian Mind, published by Dunhams Manor Books, Krall cuts clean a Double Live literary concept album, where each titled chapter acts as a song that breathes on its own, but nods to the heaving collective. Pink Floyd on Yuggothian acid come to glistening life. This is post-Ligotti, impressionist Lovecraftianism - suggestive, urban, monumentally Weird, spontaneously murderous, and totally lacking in incomprehensible alien gods or even recognizable monsters, except for those who live down the block, or hang around the playground reading manuals on industrial parks. Krall creates vignettes that are familiar yet cold and otherwordly. Askew. Like when a movie crew films something that is supposed to be set in New York on the streets of Toronto to save a nickel and ruin America. We're TOLD that we're in SoHo, but none of the streets seem to fit. The landmarks are all absent.

Krall is a stylist as much as a storyteller, creating interesting, intersecting characters that could shoulder their own novels, based on their own internal cataclysms and the doom that follows each step. Osman and Xynobis, Roux and the nameless schmuck who fears an infestation of ants in his apartment - all of these doomed souls are begging for more pages. Themes prevail, following a wriggling through-line. Father issues and DEEP DENDO. Milk and alcohol (that's right - not scotch, not whiskey, but alcohol). These are a few of the unifying buzzwords and concepts that weave overarching throughout this work of sublime dread. Figure it all out, buddy. I have my theories. Pour me a double shot of alcohol, milk back, and you'll get my interpretation, but it feels like Nightmares from a Lovecraftian Mind is a set up to be an encyclopedia mortis of KrallCraftian tomes. One can only hope.

The world he presents is a stark, threatening one, where every stranger and friend are bonded immediately by their shared wish for demise. Characters are disaffected, and for good reason, as chance encounters and innocent proximity often have dire consequences. And madness is everywhere, as everywhere is madness. From the doilies of the suburban home to the jerk-off booths in Times Square. The common is made dangerous, like Hitchcock run amok in a Steadman painting. This is Krall's umbrella shielding a cosmic rain, yet the rivulets fall, making mad those dampened, one breath and random conversation from murder, or worse.

Krall's prose is clean but rich, interesting in its word selection. He's mature and jaunty. Saucy, weaving just a honey drop of poetic flair and dollop of HPL purple into his narratives. He's the smart kid in the back of the room, who's read more than you and knows the best dirty jokes. His chapters show that he is well versed in the trappings of the baroque, but prefers to downplay the baubles in favor of a cleanly wrought sentence. It's quite the balancing act, and is seamless, with nary a stumble on the wire. Krall is joining his contemporaries in the genre in helping show us where Lovecraftian writing can go, without being chained to the increasingly played-out confines of the Cthulhu Mythos. Eerie, unsettling, smooth yet complex. Layered, odd, and infinitely quotable. These things are Nightmares of a Lovecraftian Mind.

That said, I feel like his title nods to the Cyclopean elephant not in the room, and will disappoint dilettantes who are expecting inscrutable chants, bloodied altars, and imminent global destruction, only to find a slow, ablated meltdown of a strange, cruel world. As the better Lovecraftian fiction continues to stray from the proud yet now prosaic roots of its birth, plumbing the depths of madness and fear rather than monsters in the sky, writers like Jordan Krall keep the cavalcade healthy and hale. As noted above, this is Grad School, kiddies, not 101.

Lynchian, Lovecraftian, Krallian. Can I make "Krallian" a thing? I sure as s*** hope so, as I'm trying like the dickens to get Barronic as a certifiable adjective, so let's work on Krallian next. The unformed Contempo Weird World is ours now, folks, so let's start nailing down the lexicon and shoring up the perimeter.

I know he's a hit in the Bizarro world, but I hope Jordan Krall stays and plays in County Lovecraftiana, as he adds so much to the geography. If he loves his readers - and Baby Jesus - at all, he'll start writing a novel starring the oddly necromantic Osman tomorrow.

A singular tour de force -- infused with decay and depravity and mutation and obsession

NIGHTMARES FROM A LOVECRAFTIAN MIND is a weird fiction tour de force. It's not often that I encounter a book that is--in so many ways--unlike anything I've ever read. It's a singular and extraordinary and important work.

On the surface, the only thing the unlucky characters in Krall's linked stories have in common with the stereotypical Lovecraft protagonist is an obsession with/horror of books which hold nightmares within their covers. Even this trope Krall subverts and makes his own. Real or imagined run of the mill, harmless sounding books (e.g., A Brief History of Industrial Parks) or otherwise nameless tomes are infused with esoteric power and horror and are just as likely to be monsters in and of themselves than they are to evoke them. Otherwise, Lovecraft's typical cast of characters and plot devices are in short supply in Krall's book.

But make no mistake -- NIGHTMARES FROM A LOVECRAFTIAN MIND is as Lovecraftian as it sells itself. From Krall's fusion of contemporary and archaic language (often derived from Greek words -- e.g., "Acherontic;" "Xnoybis") to the schizophrenic, hallucinatory dream logic and surreal images throughout the text to Krall's brilliant use of magical realism (or, more accurately, magical Lovecraftianism) to his astounding use of repetition of object, idea, and characters which serves to tie Krall's disparate narratives together with enormous, muscular power... Krall utilizes these elements effortlessly and seamlessly and confidently, concluding with a powerful prose poem sequence reminiscent in structure and scope of a greatly condensed version of HPL's "Fungi from Yuggoth."

Cosmic horror, in Krall's book, infects and mutates what looks at first glance like "real world," familiar situations (a door to door salesman selling his wares; a man sitting in an idyllic looking park; college kids in a college library; an insomniac spying from his bedroom on his neighbor). What results is a brilliant collection of closely linked stories--infused with decay and depravity and mutation and obsession.

In conclusion, I'm reminded of Mary Shelley's quote from Roger Corman's FRANKENSTEIN UNBOUND. If I may mangle it a bit: "Certain horror writers preach Weird Fiction. Jordan Krall *practices* it."

Wonderful short stories about the gods and goddesses of mythology. This would be a wonderful book to use with a middle school class after teaching the Greek and Roman myths. I enjoyed this collection very much. I think others would enjoy this collection as well!

Its truth was proven on March 22, 1999 when, after surviving a three-day torture orgy, Cyndi Vigil, 22, stabbed Hendy with an ice pick and escaped, clad only in a slave collar and padlocked chains. She told police that she'd been kidnapped, raped and tortured by Ray and Hendy. A second victim, Angie Montano, 27, came forward to describe how she'd survived a similar ordeal less than a month before.

Satanist Ray was the center of a web of sadism, sex slavery and murder. His disciple, drifter Dennis Roy Yancy, confessed to strangling to death Marie Parker, 22, while Ray took photos. Ray's daughter Jesse, 31, was convicted of helping her father kidnap and torture Kelli Van Cleve, 22. Cynthia Hendy told authorities that Ray had killed 14 women. Police believe that he may have slain more than 60. On September 20, 2001, Ray was sentenced to 224 years in prison.

The real story

The account of this case by Jim Fielder is the closest you can get without having access to the case files of the State Police and the FBI. Fielder did not get his information from court transcripts but was present for the hearings, trials and sentencing in this case. While other books and articles guessed as to what the items in David Ray's "toy box" looked like, Fielder gained acces to the photos used as evidence and presents them to his readers.
The information and accounts are accurate. His fresh approach to the book, as a story rather than "just the facts" gives the reader some insight into the persons who participated in this case which lasted 2 1/2 years. While Fielder takes some license as far as the interaction between the participants in this case, nothing about the case is factually inacurate. Jim Fielder takes you on an eye-opening journey into the world of criminal sexual sadism practiced by David Ray, a man the FBI described as so dangerous that if he were ever released from custody "he would re-offend before he got home." If you did not like the way this book was written but would like another version, try reading Cries in the Desert by John Glatt. He tells the same story, but it is very well written.

Mind-Numbing: You'll Never be the Same After Reading This

I like true crime for the puzzle of how they're solved, and was drawn to this one out of morbid curiousity. I thumbed through it for a good half-hour, then backed away in horror after reading the opening paragraph, which made clear what the story was about. There's nothing sensual about this story, folks, and for the FBI to claim snuff films aren't real is a tragedy. I thumbed through this book 2 months ago, and it's imprinted my psyche unlike anything else. I had to take sleeping pills to fall asleep for 2 nights, and the images from this book continue to haunt me. (And I thought nothing would bother me after watching "Texas Chainsaw Massacre.") What do we do about people like David Ray? How can we prevent others from becoming like him? I have no idea, only that nothing on this Earth can punish such cruelty and wickedness.
