"He's not really going to do it," Griffin said, as he unlocked the door to his condo and stepped aside to let Dalton in. "Cain Enterprises means as much to him as it does to any of us. He'd never let the state sell off his share of the company."

"If it was any other man, I'd agree." Dalton waited until Griffin had flipped on the lights before walking into the living room. "But he doesn't bluff. You know that."

Griffin owned the penthouse condo of the downtown high-rise where Dalton also lived. When Portia had asked for a divorce, Dalton had purchased the condo two floors down from Griffin's. The building was close to work but overpriced. Its main appeal was that because he'd been to Griffin's condo, he could buy it without having to waste a day following around some Realtor.

Griffin's condo was decorated in sleek cream leather and a lot of chrome. It was expensive and modern and, Dalton also thought, overly stark. On the other hand, his own condo was still decorated in mid-century-kicked-out-of-my-house-style, so he had little room to criticize.

Dalton headed straight for the sectional that dominated the space in front of the TV. Griffin gestured toward the wet bar tucked into the corner. He nodded to the row of bottles. "What'll you have?"

Dalton glanced at his watch. "It's not even noon."

"Right. After Dad's little bombshell, I think a drink is called for."

"Fine." Who was he to argue a point like that? And maybe a stiff drink would steady the rug that felt like it had been jerked out from under his feet. "I'll have a scotch."

Griffin rolled his eyes as if to say he thought Dalton was an idiot. Then he pulled out several bottles—none of which contained scotch—and started pouring splashes into a cocktail shaker.

"Do you have any idea if he can legally do this?"

"Unfortunately, I think he can." Dalton ran a hand through his hair. "Of course, Mother will still get all of their co-mingled assets—the houses, cars and their money. But all of his Cain stock is his to do with as he pleases. It would have been split evenly between the three of us. Now, who knows what will happen."

"I figure you have the most to lose here. What are you going to do?"

Dalton slipped out of his jacket and draped it over the arm of the sofa. Sighing, he sat down and scrubbed a hand down his face. When it came to this crazy scheme of his father's, he undoubtedly had the most to lose. He'd devoted his entire life to becoming the perfect future CEO of Cain Enterprises. Every choice he'd made from the time he was ten—from his hobbies as a child to his extracurricular activities in high school, to his college education, to the woman he married—had been about Cain Enterprises. He wasn't going to let his father piss it all away on a whim.

"One option is to wait until the bastard actually dies and then take the matter to court."

Griffin popped the top on the silver shaker and then gave it a vigorous jiggle. "At which point, all Father's assets will be tied up in litigation for a decade or so. Good plan."

Dalton leaned forward, propping his elbows on his knees. "If he wasn't already on his deathbed, I'd kill him for this."

"I'd help." Griffin chuckled as he scooped ice into glasses and then covered the ice with whatever concoction he'd mixed up. "On the bright side, the board loves you. Even if Father's assets did revert to the state, all his Cain stock would be sold, right? He alone doesn't even have a controlling majority. The board would most likely keep you on."

"And then you could keep your job as VP of international relations as well."

Griffin gave a little chuckle. "Yes. That would be ideal."

They both knew Griffin's job was a cushy one and not the kind he was likely to find anywhere else.

Griffin sliced a lime into wedges, squeezed one into each glass and then tossed another on top. "Sure, you'd be less insanely rich, but you'd still be CEO of Cain Enterprises."

"That would be the best-case scenario, yes." Dalton took the glass his brother handed him and eyed the pale green concoction. "This isn't scotch."

"Two years as a mixologist in college. I think I can do better than pouring you a scotch. This is me broadening your horizons."

Dalton took a hesitant sip. It was surprisingly good, less sweet than a margarita and with enough punch to knock a grown man on his ass—especially one who'd already been knocked on his ass once that day.

"Yes, the board might keep me on." In his experience, best-case scenarios were little more than daydreams. Reality was rarely so convenient. "It's far more likely that one of our competitors would snatch up all that Cain stock and make a bid to take over the company. Sheppard Capital is ideally positioned right now to do just that. In which case, I would most likely be fired and Cain Enterprises would be dismantled bit by bit."

For once, Griffin's characteristic charming grin was pressed into a grim line. He raised his glass and said bitterly, "To our loving father."

Dalton tapped his brother's glass and then downed a sizable gulp, almost hoping that this drink would do him in. He and Griffin had never been particularly close. Hollister had fostered too much rivalry between them for that. Even now, though they were united in their mutual disgust for their father's stunt, he had still pitted them against each other.

With the heat of the liquor still burning down his throat, Dalton voiced the question he had to ask: "Are you going to try to find her?"

Griffin made a face like he was about to spew cocktail across the room. "God, no. What would I want with Cain Enterprises?"

"Just had to check." Another thought occurred to Dalton. "There's one possibility we haven't considered. Cooper could find the girl."

Cooper was definitely a wild card in the equation. Dal-ton and Griffin had been seven and four, respectively, when Hollister brought home the then five-year-old Cooper and introduced him as his other son. He spent summers with them until Cooper's mother passed away when Cooper was sixteen. Cooper had lived with them for nearly two years, raising as much hell as he could, before going away to college. They hadn't exactly bonded.

Griffin tossed back the last of his drink. "Cooper could dismantle the company just as easily as Grant Sheppard could."

True enough… Dalton stared at the murky green dregs of his drink. If Cooper found the heiress, Cain Enterprises wouldn't be Dalton's—not the way it was meant to be.

Griffin dribbled the last bit of the drink from the cocktail shaker into both of their glasses. "So how are you going to find this mysterious sister of ours?"

"That's the question of the day, isn't it?" Hollister had been a philandering jerk for his entire married life. "It's not an issue of finding the mother so much as it is narrowing down the possibilities."

Griffin gave a bark of laughter. "Who did he meet that he didn't sleep with?"

"Exactly. When we look at it from this direction, the list of potential mothers has to be—" Dalton just shook his head, not even wanting to imagine how many women his father could have slept with. Hollister had had at least one long-term mistress when Dalton was a child, but he was afraid Sharlene was just the tip of the iceberg.

Griffin must have remembered as well. "She could be from anywhere. Any woman, in any bar, in any state in the country."

"Or from any number of foreign countries as well."

Cooper had been raised in Vale, but when Dalton had done the math—which he'd been very curious about at seven—he'd figured his father hadn't been anywhere near Colorado at the right time. However, he had been skiing in Switzerland. Since Cooper's mother had been an Olympic-caliber skier, Dalton figured they must have met there.

Thinking aloud, Dalton said, "It would be impossible to track down every woman he might have slept with during the right time, even if we could narrow down the time frame."

"Did you happen to notice the postmark on the letter?" Griffin asked.

"Yes. No return address, postmarked from the local mail station. Which is pretty smart, if she doesn't want to be found. Maybe it means she lives right around the corner. Maybe it means she lives in Toronto and paid someone to mail the letter for her."

Dalton swirled the last of the drink around the bowl of the glass as he considered their predicament. "No, the question isn't who did he sleep with. The question is, which one of those women hated him enough afterward to do something like this?"

Griffin pretended to consider, then shrugged as if giving up. "I'd guess all of them."

But Dalton shook his head. "No. Say what you will about him, but our father was a charming bastard. So that eliminates all the one-night stands and casual hookups. Someone had to really know him to hate him this much."

Dalton stood and picked up his suit coat.

Griffin raised his eyebrows. "I take it you've had an inspiration."

"Of a sort. If there's someone who hates Father that much, there's one woman who would know about it. Mrs. Fortino."

"Our former housekeeper?"

"Exactly. She knew everything that went on in that house. She'll be able to tell me what I need to know."

"She retired five years ago," Griffin pointed out. "Are you sure you can find her? Maybe she's traveling the country in a mobile home."

"She's not the one I'm worried about finding." Dalton tossed back the last of his drink. "She's not the type to travel, and she was set in her ways even when we were kids. I'm sure she&#...

Just a wonderful story!

This is a great story about two people, Lacey and Dalton, who have known each other since they were children, and Lacey's mother worked for Dalton's family! I enjoy these types of stories, because you never know how you treat someone can come back and bite you! There is not a revenge story here, just a bitter father ordering his family around to find a long lost daughter he didnt know he had because he was nasty to someone in the past, and now that is coming back to haunt him and he is very ill and does not have a long time left to find this daughter, so he orders his family to find the girl, otherwise the family fortune and business will be sold off to the state! Dalton needs Lacey to find out where this girl might be, and the story goes from there. I do not want to give too much away, but I enjoyed the arguing and banter between the two main characters here, most realistic! I thoroughly enjoyed this story! Thanks Emily McKay!

Really informative and easy to understand

I fell in love with graphic design the moment I first used Adobe Photoshop over 10 years ago. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to pursue graphic design then but now I’ve quit my job and am able to focus my energy where I want. I picked up this book and was immediately impressed by the first chapter on visual communication. From there the author delves into everything from elements and principles of design to contrast, texture, and even rhythm/movement. The use of movie posters and DVD covers throughout was perfect, having those visual references really helped me. This book has given me direction and focus for my creativity. I have been kind of randomly throwing things together and not sure what direction to take to get the result I had in my head. So glad I found this!

Has helped me with ad design immensely

I have been a full time online marketer for over seven years and, in that time, have taught myself how to use Photoshop, how to code and build website and much more. One thing that I have always struggled with, and often outsourced, was graphic design and particularly creating my own ads and banners. I'd love to be able to do this effectively on my own and Zena O'Connor's "Elements and Principles of Design" has provided me with a lot of the education and tools to start doing this. A very well explained book on basic design elements, with a ton of examples, with regards to color, image placement, shapes, tone, type-setting, and so much. Applying these principles is allowing me to creating some ads that really pop and, better yet, convert.

Very Thorough

I am assuming this was created as a text book. It is very thorough and well referenced throughout the book. My first years of architecture school dealt heavily with the topics in this book. I appreciate that different perspectives of design are covered in the book. I will be adding this book to my student reading list for my Photography and Photoshop courses. From color to type to rule of thirds, it is all covered in this book. This book is easy to read which will work well for teenagers and adults. I highly recommend.

Seriously twisted but I loved it!!!

This may be one of the most erotic stories I've ever read. I loved how the story started, and just when I thought I had a handle on the torture taking place, the story shifted...and then shifted again. And I loved it. I love reading erotic horror and this new author did not disappoint. I will definitely be checking out M.J. Ferguson's other stories and eagerly awaiting the sequel to Depravity. If you like Edward Lee and Matt Shaw, I highly recommend this one!

Dark, Twisted and Kinky, Oh My!

4.5 stars - Wow, this one threw me for a bit of a loop. This twisted little tale starts off with Master/Slave that seems to be a bit non/con, but we quickly find that isn’t the case.

This is being told in the voice of the Slave, so that helps to really get his perspective on what’s happening and his real feelings about things. Even though the actions and behavior of the Master seem pretty awful, the Slave ensures us that he actually loves everything his Master does. So, you think that’s pretty much what the story is about, until wham! there is a total twist that actually had my head spinning in an attempt at understanding what was really taking place. The feeling of mental unstableness which had been looming in the back of my mind just skyrocketed. But this isn’t even the half of it. No, there is another twist that left me cringing.

I won’t give it away, but once again, the Slave tells us a story about how he came to learn about Master’s other “kink.” Let me say that it takes quite a bit to make me squeamish, but I almost didn’t make it through this part. It is pretty gory and things are more than a little effed up.

Enough about the content. Ms. Ferguson’s first debut story packs quite the punch in very few pages. The writing is smooth and the images almost too clear. It felt as though I was watching the scenes play out, as opposed to reading them. If you love horror or kink, or kinky horror, this is a fabulous example. I am almost too afraid to see where this is going to go next, but even though I might need to read with my eyes covered at some points, like a fender bender on the highway, I doubt I’ll be able to pass it by without looking.

Wow...did not see that coming.

Wow...was not expecting that. With that said, however, I love books that challenge my imagination and I love books that are able to catch me off guard, and this one did...on every element. This is about a master and his slave and their kinks. At first, I was torn because the master does some pretty harsh things to his slave. Thankfully, the author tells the story thru the slave and you realize quickly that the slave loves everything his master subjects him too. AND...then...wow...I love the twist and actually kinda whooped at the author's creativity.
But, the author has another surprise in store and I will have to say that it not only took me off guard but also pushed the boundaries of my limits. I love my dark reads, I love learning new aspects of D/s relationships, and I love being pushed to my own limits and MJ Ferguson accomplished all of that in this very short read.
This is a dark story so be prepared if you decide to take the chance. I was reading the end with one eye open and one eye closed because I needed to see where the author was going, but a little afraid also. It's hard to say that I loved this story, considering the content, but I definitely loved the power play dynamic and I admire the author for going somewhere most would not.
There will be a book 2 coming out and I know I will read it because the author has poked my curiosity. The book is short but the author was able to cover a lot of territory and she definitely gets your attention in the first few sentences. The story is well-written​, and the plot is...well, you should just read for yourself. I'm pretty sure you will be surprised by what you find.

Japan at your finger tips...

This is a wonderful, practical and easy to use book. It gives you a good introduction about Japanese history, cultural tips, what is good "etiquette", etc. It contains detailed descriptions by region and their areas, a great section on traveler's needs (where to stay, where to eat & drink, shopping, Onsen, Theme Parks, Sports & Activities, Special interests, and a great survival guide with practical information, travel info, a life saving phrase book and a great index, the book provides a "further reading" list for you if you want to read more but honestly, with this much information it should be more than enough for my 3 week trip to Japan. The local maps are well done, they are detailed enough to take you where you need to go, they are not the best but they get the job done. The book also provides you with suggested travel itineraries and what to do/see based on your time availability. The book comes with a detailed map of Tokyo's Subway.
Cons? some people complain about the book being "heavy", this book is 1.4 pounds to me that is not a problem and it is clearly described at Amazon's website. So now you know, safe travels!

Decent guide, but flawed.

I was excited to see this guide's publication date was literally one day before I'd be leaving on my trip. With Amazon's great service, I was able to receive it in time on the day it was published.

As I used it throughout my trip to Japan, however, I was not all that impressed with the information provided. The descriptions were succinct, which I suppose is necessary when one book is expected to cover an entire country. However, I would have hoped for more depth for the larger sights in Tokyo, which I assume is the one city almost all tourists include on their trip.

The reason I choose DK Eyewitness guides time and time again is the gorgeous pictures. With the pictures, I like knowing what I'm getting myself into when I go to a place, and, for more practical reasons, pictures make it easier to identify what I'm looking at and the landmarks I should be watching for. The pictures in this book are good. Not great, but there are enough of them. However, I didn't think there were enough for the smaller cities.

Another overall plus is the condensed portion of the book containing hotel and restaurant suggestions. I don't know about everyone else, but I book my hotel far in advance, and I like checking out restaurants when I'm "on the ground." On the flip side, this guide contains very useful "Survival Guide" information about cultural customs, unique Japanese experiences (such as the onsen), and things to be aware of when traveling there (such as ladies only subway cars). I found myself referring more than once to the Survival Guide and to the handy two pages of Japanese phrases in the back.

Finally, one major thing I found dissatisfying was what I saw as inaccuracy in the listings. I relied on the subway station listings and found oftentimes that the nearest station was actually not the one or two listed for that place. For example, in Osaka, the Osaka Castle has another (much more convenient) subway stop at Tenmabashi, which the guide didn't list.

However, if you would like something to cover your entire trip--without having to purchase multiple guides for each city--then this would get the job done. I just think it could have done the job a little better, that's all.

I loved this book.

The best ravel guide isn’t going to be all about maps and hotel prices, but things to see and interesting things to make it worth visiting. This guide to visiting Japan appeals to the intellectual traveler, who wants not only the flashy sites, but also the historical ones, and the best museums. The book starts with the landscape of Japan, and all her great natural wonders, like Mount Fuji, the bamboo forests, and the hot springs where the monkeys stay in the winter. Then we’re treated to a spread on modern Japan, the native Shinto religion, and country living.

Each and every aspect of Japanese life if covered in this book, including music, plays, food, tea ceremonies, and manners. Most travelers will probably want to go to Tokyo, but there are others who might prefer the less expensive and more bucolic areas. There’s a “special interests” section, where the reader is guided to more “authentic” firsthand experiences. One of them is the home tour, where you can pay to have lunch at the home of a local family, and see exactly how they live. There are “conversation” lounges where you can practice Japanese.

I’d definitely buy this book and study it carefully before visiting Japan.

We felt honored to live among our hospitable new friends. Many of the expatriates I came to know lived there for years before and after me. This book is to share my witness of the early-on transition of not only Grand Cayman but also its sister islands, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. The aura I'd sensed over several years sadly dissipated with modernization, yet the fascination with the trio continues undaunted among the millions who now enjoy the archipelago every year, unaware that it had been an unsophisticated wonderland.. When I moved there, I had no idea what to expect. Every day was a delight to wake up to—sunny and surprising. What a paradise to introduce my edgy teenagers to. They'd be intrigued too, wouldn't they? Against their original rejection, necessity sent them down to me in my paradise. The plot then thickened.

First hand look at change in the Caribbean

The focus of this book - the changes that rushed to the once remote Cayman Islands- is full of well written, fascinating insights blended with a heart felt connection to these beautiful islands. Alice Bingner takes us to an in-between time, a time she could still enjoy the wondrous, simple beauty of island life and its inhabitants while keeping a keen eye on the seekers of profit and development, seekers who would eventually turn the quiet island into a tourist destination spot and tax shelter haven.
Gentrification of neighborhoods in the US has been well documented but it is rare to have an on the spot report of a remote island undergoing growing pains. We can be grateful to the author for her unique perspective and ability to record her observations of change in such an engaging way. Using the format of the letters between the author and her best friend, Eunie, Alice writes not only about how the Caymans change but her need to come to terms with her own dashed hopes for a new start for her family in "Paradise." A totally engrossing read - you'll be hooked from the first to the last letter. Judy Vasos

The Crest of a Wave

It was 1970—a time of experimentation, of dissatisfaction with the way things were in American society. A new kind of folk music was being played, part of a counter-culture that juxtaposed Joan Baez and Led Zeppelin, Simon and Garfunkel and Jimi Hendrix. Civil rights activities brought confrontation between Authority and “the people.” The war in Vietnam was a long-festering scar on the heart of America. A wave of change swept the world.

Alice Bingner was a journalist more than a protester. She wanted to escape the turmoil and the drugs; she wanted to make a different life for her teen-age children, who were in the throes of exploration with all its dangers. She discovered “paradise” in a little group of islands in the Caribbean called the Caymans. Relatively untouched (then) by the swirling changes in the world, they offered her simplicity. She lived there a year and reported regularly to her best friend in the States in letters that spoke of her adventures, her dreams and her disappointments. They also revealed the sudden change as the Caymans themselves rode up and over the wave.

These letters are collected, along with some of the responses, in The Caymans as they Crest: Letters to Eunie. The book reports first-hand and personal on the very beginnings of a totally new kind of world for Paradise.

Excellent for engineering types

Great book if you need to implement a "REAL WORLD" data acquisition system using the latest C# version.
Used this book as an engineering technology text last spring 2011 and most impressed.
A real bonus: the author's website has all the source code, and it all worked.
Covers legacy stuff like serial and parallel I/O, then USB interfacing, TCP/IP LAN communications (Internet stuff). Working (alias real world) threads, DLL and Data Base apps are covered. Author has a strong track record in writing in this area with an earlier book in C# 2008 and PC Interfacing.
Every student was quite pleased with the knowledge they learned during the semester, based on this book.
Footnote: I've been a practicing computer and bio-med engineer for 30 years along with a teacher, and this book is hands-down, the best at teaching tools than allow one to succeed in the real world. Yes, I've used the phrase "Real World" over and over, but most books fail in terms of teaching engineering types these skills. And not many books have downloadable code that works and it works with the free Visual C# 2010 Express. Searched all the usual suspects (book publishers), and saw nothing adequate to my course goals, until I saw the book via the British magazine Elektor. That was a lucky day for me, since I feared I would have to write my own text.

Easy to understand, yet thorough

This book covers a broad range of topics, right from the basics of installing the environment, discussion on the .NET Framework, Object Orientation principles, right through to more advanced concepts such as database access, threading, network communications and even controlling hardware.

As a developer but new to C# I found this book invaluable, and sufficiently varied to maintain a high level of interest throughout. However the book would be equally suited to an inexperienced developer who wishes to develop some basic applications.

Code examples are routinely provided, and there are full software examples provided on the publishers website including lecturing slides to further explain principles. In short a thorough yet highly interesting book.

A fantasy series that isn't just a romance

I really like this series. The magic is interesting, and well developed. My favorite part has to be the fact that there is no love triangle. Sure much of the story focuses on Edgar, and Kate running for their lives together, but that is what they are doing, running for their lives not stopping for heartfelt confessions or make out time. It's refreshing to read a ya that isn't all about the love story.
