António Miguel Rosado da Cruz is Invited Adjunct Professor in the Polytechnical Institute of Viana do Castelo. He has a PhD in Informatics Engineering from University of Porto. Has several works published, mainly in the areas of Software Engineering, Model-driven Development, Model Transformation, Software Modeling, Code Generation, User Interface Modeling, Formal Methods, Cloud computing and Metamodels.

Sara Paiva has a PhD in Computer Engineering and has been a teacher at the School of Technology and Management for 10 years. For several years now she is dedicated to the mobile development field (Android and iOS), both for lecturing and research purposes. She has more than 20 publications in journals and conferences and has participated in several research projects. She also accumulates responsibilities as Course Coordinator and as a member of several course committees. Finally, she has a background in the area of neuro-linguistic programming and coaching.

Concise & Informative

This concise book looks at the actions of President McKinley before, during, and after the War with Spain in 1898. Author Lewis Gould begins by examining the pre-war situation facing the President, and the reasons he eventually chose to go to conflict (the sinking of the Battleship Maine not being the primary reason). Then we see McKinley's stewardship during and after the Conquest. In Gould's readable prose, McKinley comes off as strong, temperate, and reasonable. Many will accept this thesis, but others may wonder why Spain would want conflict with a rising world power, one that sat far closer to Cuba than did its colonizer. Whatever your view, this is a concise, informative, and readable look.

Lewis L. Gould. The Spanish-American War and President McKinley. Lawrence, Kansas: University Press of Kansas, 1980.
In this book, Lewis L. Gould presents a concise 138-page text and argues that President William McKinley was a "forceful and effective war leader." (ix) Gould reexamines McKinley's actions leading up to and during the Spanish-American War in 1889, and concludes that he was a strong-willed, patient commander-in-chief. Past scholars described McKinley as a stepping stone to the more powerful Theodore Roosevelt and failed to recognize his contributions to the presidency. Gould attempts to change McKinley's lackluster legacy with primary and secondary sources that show him as a president with courage, foresight, and a successful record of accomplishments. Gould builds upon these sources and argues that McKinley deserves proper recognition as a president with adept diplomatic skill and strong fortitude, like Abraham Lincoln.
Gould traces McKinley's calm and enduring diplomatic negotiations with Spain for the sole purpose of avoiding war. America wanted the Spanish to recognize Cuba's independence and remove themselves from their most prized western possession. In February 1898, as tensions were growing in America, the U.S.S. Maine, moored in the Havana harbor, exploded and killed two-hundred and sixty-six sailors. The immediate after-action report blamed the explosion on a mine, however most historians agree that it was an internal boiler malfunction which caused the destruction. This event catapulted America into a war with Spain and Gould uses this to demonstrate that McKinley exhausted all diplomatic measure before waging war, giving Spain the opportunity to relinquish control of Cuba. Gould details how McKinley negotiated the war atmosphere in America and attempted to soothe the public and only resorted to war when all other options failed.
After the declaration of war in April 1898, McKinley actively devised military movements that maximized an under-funded and ill-equipped Army. Gould believes that the logistical inequities of the Army along with the inept leadership from the secretary of war, Russell Alger, were enough to hamper most leaders. But McKinley vigorously tackled the issue by supporting the Hull Bill which authorized the Army to recruit and train a quarter of a million more men for military operations. He also initiated an investigation into the poor treatment of American soldiers in the field. McKinley moved the war room to the White House and he kept in constant touch with commanders on the battlefield in almost real-time due to improvements in communications.
This book contains adequate maps and illustrations of both Cuba and the Philippines and while Gould presents his strongest and most interesting defense for his argument in chapter two, the rest of the book contributes a broad yet brief interpretation of pro-McKinley actions. The author provides sufficient support of McKinley as a talented and wise president. Gould states that McKinley's actions reveal "subtlety of action, a fortitude of will, and a simple courage that belie the easy stereotypes of his historical reputation." (52) Gould also argues that McKinley marked a significant step in the evolution of the modern president. This term requires further clarification. Was McKinley a modern president because of his use of remote voice communications during the war or because he developed a more interactive relationship with the press or that he defeated a country not in a position to defend its imperial possession? McKinley did strengthen the president's influence, but readers may not be truly impressed considering the achievements of other presidents, such as James K. Polk.

Excellent resource on scaling, pedagogically written, deep and insightful

I got this book on the hope to learn more on scaling and dimensional analysis techniques. I already owned Pankhurst's and Huntley's books on dimensional analysis as well as Lin and Segel's "Mathematics applied to deterministic problems in the Natural Sciences" but wanted to get more insight into the group theoretical aspects. At first I hesitated due to the slightly high price for such a thin book as this but at last I decided to buy it. I did not regret it. This is a great resource on the topic of scaling, showing both the theory and deep group-theoretical connections, everything explained very pedagogically and in accessible manner. I also encountered for the first time the useful concept of intermediate asymptotics. Beware potential readers though, this is not a novel and requires serious effort from your side to grasp this material.

Dimensional analysis is a must for physicists and applied mathematicians, and is usually taught to undergraduates very concisely. This short book will take it to the next level, both of mathematical rigor and of physical insight. The book is built around some well-chosen and carefully worked out examples, each a gem on its own. A pleasure to read.

About the Author
George Sand is the pen name of Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin, Baroness Dudevant, a 19th century French novelist and memoirist. Sand is best known for her novels Indiana, L?lia, and Consuelo, and for her memoir A Winter in Majorca, in which she reflects on her time on the island with Chopin in 1838-39. A champion of the poor and working classes, Sand was an early socialist who published her own newspaper using a workers co-operative and scorned gender conventions by wearing men s clothing and smoking tobacco in public. George Sand died in France in 1876.

Fanchon, the Cricket, a Story for All Times

The book is well written and hard to put down. I ordered it as my mother- in- law's name was Fanchon and she had showed me the book her mother had read upon naming her in 1901. The book became lost when her belongings were disbursed and I was afraid that I would never be able to find it. On my first try to Amazon I found it and much to my surprise this treasure was reasonably priced. I have shared it with many of my neighbors who also have given it praise. I was so happy to get the first printing and not the later one in 1926.

About the Author
Betsalel Philip Edwards was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1968. A graduate of Boston University, he studied music composition, and then religion under Elie Wiesel and Herbert Mason. Moving to Israel in 1994, he attended Bar-Ilan University, studying music composition and Jewish ethnomusicology. His first taste of the depth and wisdom of Hasidism came from the late great Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, of blessed memory. He feels that he has no merits or awards of any consequence other than the privilege of raising a family and studying the Torah in Jerusalem. The translation of the Mei HaShiloach is his first publication.

Good Find

The Mei Ha'Shiloach is not a relatively popular commentary when compared to those commentaries written by other Chassidic masters. It was therefore pleasantly surprising to find an English translation. The translator (Edwards) sticks to a fairly literal translation of the text without offering a whole lot of explanation into the author's meaning. This is great for the passages in which The Iszbitzer (author of original) provides more expansive comment. For some of the passages that are somewhat esoteric or cryptic almost, the reader would have been served by some expansion by the translator. That said, Edwards did a fine job in bringing this hard-to-find but important commentary to the public. He does go out of his way to break the language down so that the comments are understandable by even the uninitiated without going so far as to alienate more experienced readers.
Finally, Edwards does provide some welcome historical context relating to The Iszbitzer in which he refers the reader to the translation of the book's original forward (also provided). Additional objective historical detail would have good inasmuch as that forward was written by the author's own grandson. But that's just being picky. All in all, this is a good addition to one's library.

The holy Ishbitzer in English - Gevalt

Bezalel Edwards has done a service to the entire Torah- loving- through - English - primarily world by translating the Mei Hashiloach into English. This is one of the great Hasidic commentaries on the Torah. Many are those who champion it and find in it the deepest of Torah insights. The Ishbitzer in some ways has a psychological acuity which seems to speak most strongly to those of the present generation. Of course Rav Shlomo Carlebach repeatedly learned from and taught Ishbitz. So too did one of his greatest pupils , the Holy Teacher David Hertzberg whose profound insights into the Ishbitz were part of the Torah given over in his own sefer ' Pri Mayim Chayim' Bezalel Edwards shows a good command of the text. One would like very much however to see this translation printed with the original text alongside, a dual- language volume. Perhaps some enterprising publisher in the world of Judaica could start bringing out such dual- language volumes. Another candidate for this would be the Ishbitzer's great teacher, the Kotzker.Somehow for certain readers anyway the dual- language works add a dimension to our learning which having the text in the language of translation alone does not.

But again Yishar Koach to Bezalel Edwards on this excellent work.

This is probably the most inviting, beautifully done, charming series of astrological books for children and their parents that I have seen. The illustrations are perfect and the text is meaningful and obviously written by a knowledgeable astrologer, with a great sense of humor to boot.

Each booklet contains a generic Welcome to Zodiac Zone which introduces the reader to a brief history of astrology. (Little side squiggles unobtrusively teach, such as "The word zodiac comes from the ancient word for "circle of animals" or my favorite "Psst! Looking for predictions? Sorry. The best astrologers know that the stars don't make things happen--people do!") There is a colorful astrological map showing the 12 signs, glyphs and dates, 2 pages of planets and even a few sentences on elements and qualities, all done in a very easy to read, fun fashion, good information comprehensible to the young and their parents.
