The Last Chinese Chef: A Novel, by Nicole Mones

This alluring novel of friendship, love, and cuisine brings the best-selling author of Lost in Translation and A Cup of Light to one of the great Chinese subjects: food. As in her previous novels, Mones’s captivating story also brings into focus a changing China -- this time the hidden world of high culinary culture.

When Maggie McElroy, a widowed American food writer, learns of a Chinese paternity claim against her late husband’s estate, she has to go immediately to Beijing. She asks her magazine for time off, but her editor counters with an assignment: to profile the rising culinary star Sam Liang.

In China Maggie unties the knots of her husband’s past, finding out more than she expected about him and about herself. With Sam as her guide, she is also drawn deep into a world of food rooted in centuries of history and philosophy. To her surprise she begins to be transformed by the cuisine, by Sam’s family -- a querulous but loving pack of cooks and diners -- and most of all by Sam himself. The Last Chinese Chef is the exhilarating story of a woman regaining her soul in the most unexpected of places.

Amazon.com Review
Nicole Mones has mined the endless riches of China once again in The Last Chinese Chef. This time she hits the trifecta: the personal stories of Sam and Maggie, the history and lore of Chinese cuisine, and an inside look at cultural dislocation. Maggie McElroy is a widowed American food writer who is suddenly confronted with a paternity claim against her late husband's estate--by a Chinese family. Her editor offers her another reason to go to Beijing: write an article about a rising young Chinese-American-Jewish chef, Sam Liang. Having sold the home she had with her late husband Matt and reduced her possessions to only the barest necessities, with her life feeling as though it is contracting around her, Maggie embraces the oppportunity to sort out her feelings about Matt's supposed infidelity and do some work at the same time.

She and Sam hit it off right away, even though he is involved in a very important competition for a place on the Chinese national cooking team for the 2008 Olympics. They travel together to the south of China where she meets her husband's possible daughter--with Sam standing by to act as translator--and where Maggie meets much of Sam's family. He has been welcomed back with open arms, even though he occasionally feels that he has one foot in China and one in Ohio. The Beijing uncles and the Hangzhou uncle are a raucous, loving, argumentative bunch of foodies who advise Sam about menus, encourage a romance with Maggie, make him start over again when the dish isn't perfect, and alternately praise and criticize his cooking.

Maggie loves being in the middle of it all and finds herself more and more drawn to Sam. She begins, with Sam's help, to see food as "healing" and understands the guanxi or "connectedness" that takes place around food. At the beginning of each chapter is a paragraph taken from a book entitled The Last Chinese Chef, written by Sam's grandfather and translated by Sam and his father. Mones has written that book, too, which is an explanation of the place of food in Chinese history and family life. The novel is rich with meaning and lore and an examination of loving relationships. Don't even touch this book when you're hungry. The descriptions make the aromas and textures float right off the page. --Valerie Ryan

From Publishers Weekly
A recently widowed American food writer finds solace and love—and the most inspiring food she's ever encountered—during a visit to China in Mones's sumptuous latest. Still reeling from husband Matt's accidental death a year ago, food writer Maggie McElroy is flummoxed when a paternity claim is filed against Matt's estate from Beijing, where he sometimes traveled for business. Before Maggie embarks on the obligatory trip to investigate, her editor assigns her a profile on Sam Liang, a half-Chinese American chef living in Beijing who is about to enter a prestigious cooking competition. Sam's old-school recipes and history lessons of high Chinese cuisine kick-start Maggie's dulled passion for food and help her let go of her grief, even as she learns of Matt's Beijing bed hopping. Though the narrative can get bogged down in the minutiae of Chinese culinary history (filtered through the experiences of Sam's family), Mones's descriptions of fine cuisine are tantalizing, and her protagonist's quest is bracing and unburdened by melodrama. Early in her visit, Maggie scoffs at the idea that "food can heal the human heart." Mones smartly proves her wrong. (May)

From Booklist
Food writer Maggie McElroy fights a losing struggle with grief following her attorney husband's death. When a woman in China files a paternity claim against the estate, Maggie pulls herself together and rushes to Beijing to find the mother and determine her charge's validity. Maggie's editor suggests that as long as Maggie must travel to China anyway, she should research an article about a young American-born Jewish Chinese chef. Determined to open a restaurant dedicated to the most ancient examples and purest principles of Chinese cuisine, this young chef has begun a translation of his grandfather's celebrated book about cooking in the imperial court. Under the guidance of his kitchen-savvy uncles, he must also prepare to compete in a nationwide culinary competition. In Mones' skilled hands, the grandfather's memoir becomes a book within the novel. Mones' achievement appeals not just to devotees of fiction but equally to anyone interested in Chinese cooking. Exquisite
By P. Wung
There are certain times where I feel a certain condescension when I read foreigners trying to read meanings and poetry into what I feel is my domain as a person of Chinese ancestry. This isn't one of those times. In fact I feel humbled and delighted by the lessons that Nicole Mones was able to impart upon me.

It is rare that I get up from a book about China so totally enthralled and educated from a tome written by a yang ren, a foreigner. This book is the second book that has made me feel this way in the last few years. The first was Oracle Bones: A Journey Between China's Past and Present by Peter Hessler, it was a non-fictional observation about China and the impact that globalization has had on Chinese society. This book is a work of fiction, by virtue of that fact, it was able to draw me further into all that it had to convey: on being Chinese, on the complicated intertwining of Chinese food culture and general culture, on the meaning of guanxi, on the wonders of Chinese cuisine.

I had always felt that due to the unsavory nature of Chinese-American food as it is, that the true nature of Chinese cuisine has never been fully unleashed on the American palate. I have stewed on the fact that the French and Italian cuisines rank so much higher on the sophistication scale of the American gastronome versus the lowly Chinese cuisine. I felt it but I was unable to express it adequately. Nicole Mones has done this and more with this story. Her descriptions of the dishes, her attention to the details of the preparation, her insistence on relaying the philosophical nature of food, on presentation, on the small details and gestures so very important in China, on the little puns and literary allusions of Chinese food had opened my eyes and sent me headlong into a frenzy to rediscover my heritage through my ample stomach. Thankfully, she was good enough to have included an afterward full of resources for research so that I can research these ideas on my own.

To top it all off, she was able to wrap all of the scholarly work in a very touching and suspenseful story. After all, guanxi is all about people. The characters in this book are not necessarily completely developed, except maybe for Sam and Maggie but the other characters are developed enough to elicit emotional responses, I cared about what happened to these characters. The relationships drawn in the story are very Chinese and yet also very western, the ending had a nice and tangy sweetness to it which made me smile.

I really liked this book, it combined a lot of my own personal loves: my ancestry, food, methods of writing, and China itself to pull me in and stay there until the end. It was informative with out being didactic, sentimental without being maudlin, philosophical without being humorless, and dramatic without dropping into melodrama.

I guess you can say that I endorse this book highly.

Chinese cuisine and a gentle love story reign supreme!
By K. M.
Nicole Mones delivers a languid, sumptuous story about an American widow, Maggie McElroy, who journeys to China to find out whether a child born there to another woman was fathered by her late husband. She also has an assignment to write an article on a Chinese/Jewish-American chef, Sam Liang, who is descended from a line of venerable masters of cuisine and to whom Maggie gradually, sweetly grows close.

The reader is immersed in the lives of those Maggie meets, in the essences of Chinese culture and familial bonds, and in the meaning of food and the culinary arts there. Often whilst reading, one can almost breathe in tempting aromas of dishes being prepared in bustling Chinese kitchens. But although succulent meals can be vicariously savored regularly in THE LAST CHINESE CHEF, and food is arguably at the heart of the novel, Mones doesn't scrimp on plot or on presenting believable and very different human characters, all of whom share one bounty: every person is basically decent and kind (not a ready characteristic of much current literature). No character leaves a dastardly or incorrigible impression when all is said and done. Indeed, the reader is left with a halcyon -- though perhaps an overly optimistic -- feeling that everything works for good, even if fate isn't immediately favorable.

Four and a half stars for a luscious feast of a book that radiates a love for China, its people, and its delectable cooking traditions.

Can't stop talking about this book...
By Chef Panda
This book combines everything worthy in this world, good food, tender love and the warmth of family and place that touch your heart. Anyone who's "in love" with China would know the crazy feeling that enfolds you and everything becomes surreal and every sense is heightened.

This book captures that feeling and more...the characters are so real and believable that the moment the characters finally come together, it's something you've been rooting for all along. You want him to win, you want her to heal her heart...you want them together. When she thinks of staying in China forever, you tell her, yes, go on!!!

You read the culinary history excepts of Liang Wei with just as much intensity and you feel yourself drawn into a world that you wish you knew or as Sam feels, needs to be connected to...to be whole. The conversations he has with his uncles are some of the liveliest parts of the book....family ties you wish you had following you around the kitchen.

You don't need to love Chinese food or be a culinary history buff, this book is that good. But I guarantee you'll become one afterwards. You'll want another book to continue because the stories are so rich and there's still so much more we want to experience and *taste*!!! Did I mention all the luscious food, you'll never look at wonton soup the same way again...

The Guv'nor, by Lenny McLean

Lenny McLean was one of the deadliest bare-knuckle fighters Britain has ever seen. He had dear, powerful friends, but he also had terrible enemies. So much so that he has two bullet wounds in his back, and has been stabbed repeatedly—always from behind. Lenny, however, is also a warm, grizzly bear of a man, whose main weakness is an overwhelming desire to put the welfare of his mates ahead of his own well-being. In this autobiography he tells of how the mafia flew him to New York to take on their greatest bare-knuckle boxer in a multi-million pound illicit challenge bout. The Mafia's man lasted less than three minutes. When the IRA fronted up a London gang in a money-laundering scam, Lenny was brought in to intimidate the terrorists. The IRA, not surprisingly, backed off. Lenny's most serious trial came when he was accused of murder. Fighting to prove his innocence against a minimum sentence of 25 years, Lenny never gave up, and went on to be found not guilty. After deciding to retire from the violent life, Len turned his hand to acting, having parts in The Fifth Element and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

About the Author
Anthony Thomas is a leading authority on Lenny McLean and became so fascinated with the man that he decided to set up his own Guv'nor website. Anthony used this as a starting point for the countless interviews he has since compiled for the book.

An unsatisfying page-turner.
By Zendicant Pangolin
I suspect that like many readers I bought this because of Lenny Maclean's really compelling performance on the movie 'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels' in which he played what he was in real life, a minder. He made up a large part of what 'made' that movie for me.
As such, I was interested to read about his real life as a minder.
Other reviews here have told you the gist of the story and accurately stated that the book hold's one's attention from beginning to end (well, the first 2/3's anyway, after that it gets to be a bit of a drone). Overall, it is a readable book and pretty entertaining too, what with its slang-packed dialogue and pretty much non-stop action.
In truth, it's not much of an autobiography though. Mr. Maclean was too concerned with telling how "I bashed this guy and I bashed that guy and then I bashed another three guys" (or I did this dodge, and that scheme, another scheme) to engage in any meaningful self-reflection.
Don't laugh, Mr. Maclean tells the reader throughout that he is a thinking man's villain and not your run of the mill bone breaker, yet we get nothing more than a litany of fights, capers, crimes and prison stays.
I was curious to know more about his family life and friends. Based entirely on the book, Mr. Maclean had no intimate friends, his wife's family was non-existent, and he seemed to actually enjoy all aspects of fighting (hurting people and getting hurt). It would have been interesting to know why he didn't form friendships (did people fear he'd violently turn on them at the drop of a hat?), and his thoughts on why he was so compelled to violence (his excuse that he was put upon by his stepfather is a weak one).
I suppose it would have been painful to just come out and say about oneself that I am simply a criminal. It is far easier to attempt to justify one's criminality. I believe this is what Mr. Maclean has done. It's too bad, because what he does by doing this is create a world where Law and Order is always or almost always wrong/crooked and villains live in a self-created world of perfect justice if only they were left alone to do so.
This is wrong-headed, not to say self-serving and rather vicious, and it doesn't make me think very highly of Mr. Maclean. This, and the fact that he seems to gloss over certain stuff, such as his career ending fight with Cliff Field for instance, and even details of the first fight against Roy Shaw. It's the little stuff like that one feels is missing from the book to make it truly autobiographicl, know what I mean?
There is a book by a similar character, albeit Australian, called 'Chopper' by Mark Reade (actually, I guess he's written many books by now). I would suggest you read him. I think you'll find the lack of self-pity refreshing.
I'm sorry that Mr. Maclean died just at the point where he seemed to have matured out of what might best be described as an adolescent world view. It would have been interesting to see what became of him.

Not an autobiography
By Bart
I was looking forward to this read on the steamy side of the east end and the hard and gracious Guv'nor. The kindle version is just cobbled together and not a fluid read at all. I kept reading thinking I'd eventually get to the actual biographical part, sadly it never appeared. There are elements that must be drawn from the physical book but mostly it's the fond memories of family and friends and it reads like a fan club. I am sure the Guv'nor was worthy of all the praise but I thought I was buying a biography not a fan mail compilation. I only gave three stars because the man himself was not around. A real shame, I guess I will need to buy the actual book to see if that's what I had hoped for. To quote the man himself from LSATSB this book is an "expletive" liability.

Lenny Mclean was a hard bastard
By Paul Havard
Lenny Mclean was a hard bastard, he had a hard if not brutal upbringing in Hoxton - East End of London and emerged as the leading bare knuckle fighter of his time. He worked the doors of the great clubs in such as the Hippodrome and was available as hired muscle with no questions asked for London's top underground figures. In he life, he estimates he had 2 or 3000 fights and altercations. After narrowly escaping a murder charge, he turned to acting and played the heavy in Lock Stock and 2 smoking barrels. They don't bread them like this anymore.

Whitewash to Whitewash (Large Print 16pt), by Daniel Brettig

Watching Warne, McGrath and Langer leave the field for the last time after the 2007 Ashes whitewash, Michael Hussey knew that life was going to get tough for the Australian cricket side. With these stars retiring and more to follow, he wondered how the team could ever recover. This is the inside story of how it did. No - one foresaw quite how far Australia would fall, or for how long. For the next seven years, disasters on the field were echoed by failings in the boardroom and at the management table. Twenty20 loomed large, three coaches came and went, Ricky Ponting made way for Michael Clarke. The Argus review argued for fundamental change in the team. England took their revenge on the pitch and India asserted its dominance off it. Somehow, though, out of the worst of the chaos in 2013 emerged the sweetest of triumphs: a team of old campaigners and emerging youngsters shook off the recent past to repeat the 5 - 0 Ashes sweep at home. Australian cricket was back. One of Australia's sharpest cricket writers, Daniel Brettig watched all this unfold at close quarters. Drawing upon the frank reflections of a host of key figures in Australian cricket and his own observations from behind the scenes, he seamlessly weaves together events on and off the field into a fascinating insider's account of the lows and highs of recent Australian cricket. Whitewash to Whitewash tells a tale that is in turns ludicrous, uproarious and heroic - and the great comeback stories of modern times.

‘These were flawed years for the Australian game, its players and its decision-makers’
By Jennifer Cameron-Smith
In 2007, Australia won the Ashes Series against England in a 5-0 whitewash, the first time this had been achieved in an Ashes series since 1921. In 2014, Australia repeated the 5-0 whitewash. In between these two successes were many failures: both on and off the field.

At the end of the Ashes Series in 2007, Justin Langer, Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne each retired from Test Cricket. Damien Martyn had retired earlier in the series. Everyone expected that the retirements of four such successful players would have a significant impact on the Australian team, but none of us expected it would be as significant as it was.

So, what happened and how did the Australian team recover? Daniel Brettig is a journalist who writes about cricket and has added the reflections of a number of key Australian cricket figures to his own observations in writing this book. It makes for fascinating reading: a case study in succession planning, in management of individuals and of adapting to changing circumstances.

During that seven year period, the changes included: Twenty20 cricket became more significant in Australia creating its own set of headaches for cricket management; Michael Clarke replaced Ricky Ponting as the Australian captain; and Darren Lehmann became the third Australian Cricket coach since John Buchanan retired in 2007. During the same period, there were a series of controversies: ‘Monkeygate’ - the alleged racial abuse of Andew Symonds by Harbhajan Singh; the sacking of Simon Katich which followed a dressing room incident between Katich and Michael Clarke; the horror of losing three Ashes Series (2009, 2011 and 2013); the ‘homework’ saga and the firing of Mickey Arthur as Australian coach; and the Argus Review into Cricket Australia.

Finally, under coach Darren Lehmann (appointed just weeks before the Ashes loss in 2013), Australia wins the Ashes in 2014. Success at last!

What I enjoyed most about this book were the insights offered by those players and members of the coaching and management staff into the events of the period. Many of the attempts to manage incidents were reactionary, without (seemingly) much thought being given to either team building or long term consequences. There are questions, too, about how involved the captain and coach should be involved in selection, about how younger players should be welcomed and mentored, about succession planning, and striking a balance between the needs of individuals and the needs of the team. Did Cricket Australia do enough to support Andrew Symonds after ‘Monkeygate’? Oh, and what is being done to foster spin bowling?

This is an interesting study of personalities and of management in a game that many of us love. I hope that the current board of Cricket Australia learns from the mistakes of the past.

Note: My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher Penguin Australia for an opportunity to read a copy of this book.

Wow. Very well read. The story is so brutal that parts were hard for me to listen to. I realize it is not totally historically accurate, but what a story. Very compelling, but not for the weak of heart.
