Key book on Old Testament history

If you're looking for background material for a Bible study or a sermon on the Old Testament, read this book. It will illuminate your understanding significantly. As an example, it stripped some of the glory from Hezekiah's reign. Maybe the Assyrians retreated, but according to Assyrian records he still ended up paying tribute. It tells me the victory was not as complete as the version of the story we're typically told in Church, otherwise why would Josiah have gone out to fight against Egypt when they were targeting Assyria? It's likely that Judah remained a tribute state, despite being spared complete destruction during Hezekiah's reign. This is only one example from the book. Of course, it's always a challenge to reconstruct all the exact details of an ancient period, but you're given a lot to chew on.
