Great follow up to Recon
By ReineCheck
Full disclosure - I received a copy of this book from the author at no charge, just a request for an honest review.

I really enjoyed Recon (The Fringe Book 1) and have been eagerly awaiting the release of this next book in the series. Harper is such a fun character to read, and I love her complicated relationship with the mercurial Eli. The evolution of their relationship feels very real within the context of their circumstances, and you can't help but root for them despite all of their increasingly tough odds.

The author does a great job of deepening the mystery surrounding the true nature of both the Compound as well as the people out on the Fringe. I like a story that draws you into the lives of the characters, and leaves you as mixed up by the details as they are. Exposure did this for me. I liked the personal growth exhibited by Harper and Eli as they each struggled to protect the other while fighting for their own survival in a number of very dangerous situations. The action in this book was intense and not gratuitous, which I also appreciated.

Final verdict - Exposure is definitely worth the read.

Terrific sequel and I can't wait for book 3!
By Albert Bowes
**DISCLAIMER-I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this novel. However, after finishing, I also purchased a copy because I want to be able to support authors I enjoy so they can afford to write more of what I want to read!**

This book took everything that happened in Recon (Fringe Book 1) and upped it by another order of magnitude! More excellent plotting, dialogue, and characterization just like in Recon. A bit of a shift here, though, as a warning: A lot of the plot takes place out in the Fringe, so there is a lot of Eli and Harper. Sawyer takes the biggest leap in growth of all the secondary characters and I'm looking forward to see what she does in Book 3. One great thing that Benner does in her novels is to incorporate reality into her characters, scenes, and environment. Example: The fight scenes and description of the dead level-read the book!-and its concept and usefulness are terrific. If you read her afterword, you'll see that she isn't just making things up to suit her needs; she's done the research. A standout among post-apocalyptic/dystopia offerings, start reading this series now before all your friends tell you about the 'great new author' they found!

An Engrossing and Thought Provoking Realistic Dystopian Series
By vhdonahue
I Thoroughly enjoyed this perfect sequel to "Recon". I would rate this as my best realistic Dystopian series yet. The story builds up smoothly soon after where "Recon" ends. This book swept me into a whole other universe, I could identify with both the main character's feelings of pain, fear, sadness, desperation and happiness. The chemistry between Eli and Harper is tender, the suspense palpable and the plot absorbing. The story and her story telling ability were so intense and attractive that I had a hard time putting the book down.
If you enjoyed authors like Marie Lu, Veronica Roth, then Tarah Benner should be added to your favorite list. Thanks for a super written story.

Dreaming Souls: Sleep, Dreams and the Evolution of the Conscious Mind (Philosophy of Mind), by Owen Flanagan

What, if anything, do dreams tell us about ourselves? What is the relationship between types of sleep and types of dreams? Does dreaming serve any purpose? Or are dreams simply meaningless mental noise--"unmusical fingers wandering over the piano keys"?
With expertise in philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience, Owen Flanagan is uniquely qualified to answer these questions. And in Dreaming Souls he provides both an accessible survey of the latest research on sleep and dreams and a compelling new theory about the nature and function of dreaming. Flanagan argues that while sleep has a clear biological function and adaptive value, dreams are merely side effects, "free riders," irrelevant from an evolutionary point of view. But dreams are hardly unimportant. Indeed, Flanagan argues that dreams are self-expressive, the result of our need to find or to create meaning, even when we're sleeping. Rejecting Freud's theory of manifest and latent content--of repressed wishes appearing in disguised form--Flanagan shows how brainstem activity during sleep generates a jumbled profusion of memories, images, thoughts, emotions, and desires, which the cerebral cortex then attempts to shape into a more or less coherent story. Such dream-narratives range from the relatively mundane worries of non REM sleep to the fantastic confabulations of deep REM that resemble psychotic episodes in their strangeness. But however bizarre these narratives may be, they can shed light on our mental life, our well being, and our sense of self.
Written with clarity, lively wit, and remarkable insight, Dreaming Souls offers a fascinating new way of apprehending one of the oldest mysteries of mental life.

Amazon.com Review
It is a long-held notion of evolutionary theory that every aspect of behavior has an adaptive purpose, making the organism that exhibits it more fit for survival. That view hits a wall when it is brought to bear on dreaming, an act that seems to have no discernible adaptive advantage.

What good does it do us to dream? Cognitive scientist Owen Flanagan addresses this and related questions in Dreaming Souls, an endlessly interesting excursion into the philosophy of mind. He proposes, first, that dreaming is simply a by-product of the ordinary awareness that allows us to live as conscious beings, an unintended rejoinder to our waking states. Nature selected mammals to have rigid skeletons in a calcium-rich environment, Flanagan notes, but "cared not one bit about their color"; in the same way, he suggests, dreaming may simply be "an expectable side effect of selection for creatures designed to have and utilize experiences while they are awake, and which continue to have experiences after the lights go off." All this is not to say that dreams are unimportant, Flanagan adds, even though they may not be especially trustworthy; dreams may be a useful means of mind reading, something we constantly do while we are awake, interrogating ourselves constantly in order to gauge our thoughts and responses to the world around us. Dreams enable us, too, to mine below the narrative self of daily life, the person we present to others, a mask that may be quite different from who we really are. ("The self," Flanagan observes, "trades in fiction rather than fact.")

Flanagan proposes no definitive answers to the question of why we dream, but his ideas are stimulating and well-argued, and they open the door to further investigation. --Gregory McNamee

From Kirkus Reviews
An informative review of current research on sleep and dreams and a new theory about the nature and function of dreaming, presented with clarity, wit, and finesse. Flanagan (philosophy, experimental psychology, and neurobiology/Duke Univ.), editor of the Philosophy of Mind Series, to which the present work belongs, brings insights from philosophy, phenomenology, evolutionary biology, psychology and psychiatry, anthropology, sociology, and neuroscience to his theory of dreams. What's more, he does so in an unpedantic way that utterly engages the reader. Dreaming, he asserts, is not an evolutionary adaption but a side effect of an adaptation that human beings have learned to use in creative and helpful ways. While Flanagan's theory sees dreaming''a free rider on a system designed to think and to sleep''as serving no direct biological function, he finds that dreams do matter, for they sometimes possess meaningful structure, are sometimes self-expressive, and sometimes provide insights into one's own mind and one's relations with others. Unlike Freud, he finds that most dreams do not conceal their content or have deep meaning. He uses Freud's famous ``wolf man'' dream interpretation to illustrate the implausibility of the Freudian approach and argues that his own alternative is both plausible and testable. He also takes issue with the notion that dreams are wellsprings of creativity, effectively destroying the commonly accepted belief that the lengthy ``Kubla Khan'' came to the poet Coleridge in a dream and that Mary Shelley dreamed the entire plot of the novel Frankenstein before writing it down. What is important to remember, in Flanagan's view, is that while dreams, hatched in the chaotic activity of the brainstem, sometimes don't mean much of anything, the images and memories activated in our sleep are our own, and it is we ourselves who give them narrative shape. Diagrams, cartoons, quotations, and of course dreamsmostly but not always the author's ownilluminate and enliven the presentation. Science writing at its best. Review

"Flanagan's Dreaming Souls is, quite simply, a masterpiece: learned, lively, and surpassingly smart. Owen's voice in this book is so honest, direct, lovable and funny, it kept reminding me of Frank McCourt. And yet it IS neurophilosophy. It is about the whys and wherefores of our dreaming brains."--Patricia S. Churchland, Presidential Professor of Philosophy, University of California, San Diego, author of Neurophilosophy: Toward a Unified Science of the Mind-Brain

"Owen Flanagan does it again. He takes one of the most fascinating and elusive topics in mind/brain research, the 'why' of dreams, and ropes it into a coherent notion that one and all can understand. I won't spoil it for you and tell you his intriguing idea. But I will tell you, I think he is on to something big."--Michael S. Gazzaniga, Director, Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, Dartmouth College, author of Cognitive Neuroscience: The Biology of the Mind and The Mind's Past

"Are dreams just the noise that the brain makes during sleep? Flanagan makes us take this question seriously as he builds dream consciousness into his new brain-based philosophy of mind."--J. Allan, Director of Laboratory of Neurophysiology, Harvard Medical School and author of Sleep, The Dreaming Brain, and most recently Consciousness

"How important to have a philosopher dedicate himself to the basic questions of human psychology. Owen Flanagan challenges and synthesizes contemporary theories of mind to arrive at a provocative understanding of the relationship of dream and dreamer."--Peter D. Kramer, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, Brown University, author of Listening to Prozac and Should You Leave?

"An informative review of current research on sleep and dreams and a new theory about the nature and function of dreaming, presented with clarity, wit, and finesse.... Science writing at its best."--Kirkus Reviews

Focus on the physiological
By Leslie Halpern
"Dreaming Souls" clearly lays out an anti-Freudian way of viewing dream content. Flanagan's focus on dreams as "free-riders" that coincidentally join us each night when we sleep is a fascinating way to interpret the latest in sleep science.

He offers his Laws of Dream Science to help explain the bizarre nature of our dreams without giving them undeserved (in his opinion) importance to our everyday lives. His IUD scale measures the incongruity, uncertainty, and discontinuity found in most dreams. The descriptions of our physiological processes during sleep are presented in easy-to-understand language, with diagrams and an occasional photograph to help discuss these complex ideas.

A Duke University professor, Flanagan adroitly explains difficult concepts in simple terms that even a C-student freshman could understand (which may or may not be a good thing for you). Despite this small complaint about style, the substance of this book is so overwhelmingly important that anyone the least bit interested in sleeping, dreaming, Freud, or consciousness should read it.

An important book on the 100 year mark of Freud's theory.
By Daniel A. Oldis
On the 100th anniversary of Freud's THE INTERPRETATION OF DREAMS, the philosopher/scientist Owen Flanagan has given readers a facinating synthesis of natural selection and depth psychology in the form of an original theory regarding the purpose and function of dreams. Written in a lively and conversational style, the book dissects such disparate dream-work hypotheses as Freud's, Hobson's and Crick's on its way to a realistic yet human understanding of Hamlet's rub. Dreams are not evolutionary adaptations and do not contribute to the species' survival; they are simply by-products of the neuro-chemical goings-on of sleep, but they do reveal ouselves to ourselves and contribute to personality and identity. This book is a worthwhile companion to Antonio Damasio's THE FEELING OF WHAT HAPPENS from a neurological perspective and Gordon Globus' DREAM LIFE, WAKE LIFE from a philosopical one. Flanagan elaborates on the epistomological musings of Descartes (how can we know if we are ever truly awake and not dreaming?), the moral dilemma of St. Augustine (can we truly sin in deams?) and the objectivity challenge of Daniel Dennet (do we actually dream at all or just invent the dream story upon awakening?) While there are interesting examples of dream interpretation here, readers should not look for deep symbolism, creativity wonder stories, Jungian archetypes or a how-to book on decoding one's own dreams. Neither does this book really have much to say about the general evolution of consciousness outside of dreams--Damasio's is the place to go for that. But this is good reading on the cognitive structure of dreams and it is science straight up--an important book as our dreams, along with our lives, move into the next millenium.

A Better Way To Consider Dreams
By Thomas H. Lynch
Flanagan delivers a theory of dreams that could largely supplant the psychodynamic dream theories of Freud, Jung and others of this ilk. Freud, as is well known, thought dreams release socially unacceptable desires that got repressed in our waking lines. Dreams are a royal road to the dynamic, meaningful unconscious. Is an intimidating theory that makes it prudent either to forget dreams or keep them to oneself, or save to disclose in the confidentiality of therapy. Jung's theories were not so narrowly based, but nonetheless he touts dream material as personally laden messages cast up from the deep coils of our personal and collective unconscious minds.
Flanagan has a much friendlier, sensible view based on modern findings about how our brains actually work, as well as an extensive survey of actual dream content, information not available in the early 20th Century when Freud and Jung cranked out their dream theories. Flanagan's book is well worth the effort to understand. I will attempt a few highlights so as to whet your appetite to learn more directly from his book.
One key concept is that our brains evolved within social groups of our early ancestors. We need to make sense of things while awake, especially what's what in our own social group. We are tuned to take gossip and make the best story we can of it. We're storytellers one and all, making up a story and calling it what actually happened. We hear and see whatever fits in with the stories we have constructed over time.
The brain never turns off. Flanagan credits as dreams any mentation we have while not awake. Let me attempt report to you Flanagan's idea of dreaming in the rapid eye movement part of sleep. If you observe a sleeping person whose eyeballs are moving back and forth under their lids, and then wake the person suddenly, usually the person will report mentation that has a storyline. Flanagan points out that the rapid eye movements are controlled by neurons in the pontine brainstem (rather than a result of a dreamer looking at images of the dream), so rapid eye movements are indicative of PGO waves originating in the pons (P) from neurons that move the eyes. These neurons also signal the lateral geniculate (G) body in the thalamus and the occipital cortex (O), which is the main visual processing area of the brain. The PGO waves are also involved in the neurochemical stockpiling of neurotransmitters secreted by neurons. The puzzle of sleep is far from being completely solved, but most likely restoring the stockpiles is a major function. Prolonged lack of sleep does lead to fuzzy brain functioning. The PGO waves stimulate neurons all over the brain to get on with producing neurotransmitters, and all sorts of mentation bubbles up. However, Flanagan reasons: "but there is no reason...to think that the content of the mentation of the PGO waves is causally related to these processes. The mentation that occurs is mostly noise-at least as measured against what one is trying to learn and remember." (page 118) Flanagan cites research that shows people don't typically dream about what is recently learned, although the so-called "today's residue" does occasionally appear in dreams. The content of dreams and the content of memories we'd like to consolidate do not make a good match.
Now, the part of the cortex we use to make up stories during the day is not completely shutdown in sleep. Once the mental contents stirred up by the PGO waves interact with this part of the brain, a cohesive story may result. Flanagan feels most of the time the story is very weak. After all, we have four or five rapid eye movement episodes a night, making up to 35 a week. Once in a while we get a dilly, but Flanagan feels mostly we get noise. Not that this noise is to be disregarded. After all, he points out, the noise of a heart can reveal much about the quality of the heart's functioning. However, it would be ludicrous to believe that noise of the heart evolved so cardiologist could make a living. So Flanagan concludes that dreams did not evolve as releasers of repressed wishes, even though dreams can be used to help ferret out all sorts of things that may be characteristic of the person. As he says, "According to the neurophilosophical view I recommend, most dreams do not express wishes. Most dreams do not conceal their content. Most dreams do not involve sex or aggression, neither on the surface nor deep down inside, neither manifestly nor latently. Most dreams do not have deep meanings -- not sexual or aggressive deep meanings, nor even deep spiritual meaning. Dreams sometimes don't mean much of anything, and they certainly don't, as a matter of policy, mean any one kind of thing. It is predictable from the fact that dreams originate in chaotic activity in the brainstem that most are bungled, as Nietzsche puts it, or that things fall apart because the center cannot hold, as Yeats puts it, and sometimes a thematic center can not even be found or, if found, cannot be maintained in the internal chaos in which dreams are hatched." (page 192) This is not to say dreams are not worth paying attention to. After all, the stories put together from the fragments triggered by PGO waves are put together by your very own "story maker." And remember, your story maker is not fully functioning in sleep. Nonetheless, it is operating, perhaps less critically and more creatively than in your waking state. Your dreams are bound to have your characteristic slant which you may not be aware of unless you study your own dreams. Dreams may be noise, biologically speaking, but just as heart noises are worth attending to, so are dreams. Just don't go ape, oops, don't go Freud!

Review
''Lewis Shiner's Frontera is an extraordinarily accomplished first novel . . . his pacing is brisk, his scientific extrapolation well-informed and plausible, and his characterization nothing short of outstanding . . . This is 'realism' of a sort seldom found in either commercial or literary fiction; to find it in a first novel makes one eager for more.'' --Chicago Sun-Times

''Hard-edged and colorful and relentless, and altogether a compelling read.'' --George R. R. Martin, author of A Song of Ice and Fire, the international bestselling series of epic fantasy novels that HBO adapted for its dramatic series Game of Thrones

''One of the genre's most arresting books.'' --Rolling Stone

About the Author
Lewis Shiner is the award-winning author of the novels Dark Tangos, Say Goodbye, and Glimpses, among others. He lives in Durham, North Carolina.

Interesting, well paced and cohesive
By Tyler Roy-Hart
If this book had been written a decade or more later, it'd be considered derivative, but at the time the themes of corporate post-collapse dominance (and their heartless manipulation of individuals) & a gritty, grim, realist approach to extraplanetary settlement were fresh. The plotting, prose and characterization are all solid or better.

I enjoyed it while I was reading it, and am still thinking about parts of it a couple weeks later - perhaps the ultimate compliment. I bought it mostly because it was cheap, but it made me want to read more of this author's work, so if the price was intended as a loss leader it was certainly effective.

Recommended to pretty much all SF fans.

A First Step Into...
By Jym Cherry
It's hard to know how to review Frontera, as a debut novel? It is Lewis Shiner's debut novel it was originally published in 1984, but is part of the definitive editions Subterranean Press is publishing of Shiner's work. So, do I take into account Shiner's later work to give the novel context? Or should I review it as any literary debut?

Lewis Shiner is categorized with cyberpunk writers like William Gibson. I really don't see it, Frontera and the other science fiction that Shiner has written seems like hard sci-fi more in the mold of Heinlein. Shiner is of the generation of writers that came to the forefront in the early 80's, that may account for the categorization. Whatever label you want to slap on Shiner's work what you're getting is good solid writing.

The world of Frontera could be tomorrow. All the world's governments have collapsed leaving the corporations to take over. Frontera is a colony on Mars that is assumed lost by those on Earth until Pulsystems, which is the corporation that has taken over the U.S., starts receiving mysterious messages from Mars about a machine with quantum possibilities. A slap-dash reconnaissance mission is thrown together to see if the colony has somehow managed to survive. The mission is led by Reese, an aging astronaut who was the first person on Mars and his only other option in life is drinking himself to death. Kane is a Pulsystems VP and former soldier sent with a mission that is obscure even to himself and pushes him to the edge of insanity. When the mission discovers the Frontera colony alive, if not totally well, they discover there is a secret on Mars that the colonists aren't willing to share.

If you've already read Shiner's later more mature writing you'll see Frontera as a starting point. You can see some of the theme's Shiner will later adopt and adapt more fully in later works, such as contentious relationships between fathers and sons. In Frontera's case, between surrogate father figure and son relationships. Older readers of Shiner's will be able to create the context it belongs in and the evolution of Shiner as a writer. If you're new to Shiner's work, it's the natural starting point and a literary debut that will lead you to the next book and the next.

Another of Shiner's novels Glimpses is also available in a definitive edition. Collected Stories is a good overview of Shiner's work.

Early cyberpunk novel
By A Customer
The bigger luminaries of the cyberpunk world are quick to include Shiner as one of their own, and this is the book which makes the cut. An entertaining novel in and of itself, it obviously has a lot of cyberpunk staples which have gotten pretty trite. One of the most interesting themes of the book parallels one of the character's journey through a Jungian archetypical legend that hearkens back to high school English class.

But Leo is not fooled, and he knows better than to trust his senses in matters of the heart. Certain that the real Rema is alive and in hiding, he embarks on a quixotic journey to reclaim her. With the help of his psychiatric patient Harvey--who believes himself to be a secret agent able to conrtol the weather--his investigation leads him from the streets of New York City to the southernmost reaches of Patagonia, in search of the woman he loves. Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best of the Month, June 2008: Imagine what it might be like to realize that the person you love is, in fact, not the person you love but a doppelgänger: or, what Leo Liebenstein coolly terms a "simulacrum" of his wife Rema at the outset of Atmospheric Disturbances. David Byrne's infamous cry that "this is not my beautiful wife" seems the most likely response, but Leo's reaction to this sea change takes unpredictable and dazzlingly plotted turns in the story that follows. Leo's journey to recover the "real" Rema is nothing short of byzantine; among its many mysteries is the delightfully inscrutable Dr. Tzvi Gal-Chen, a master meteorologist who in cleverly constructed flashback sequences takes up residence in the daily rhythms of Leo and Rema's marriage and becomes as much a focus of Leo's obsession as his wife's whereabouts. (Think Vertigo but directed by Charlie Kaufman.) Make no mistake: this is dizzying debut fiction, bursting at the spine with beautifully articulated ideas about love, yes, but also--and with maddening resonance--about the private wars love forces us to wage with ourselves. Be sure to keep a pen or pencil handy: it's impossible to resist underlining prose this good. --Anne Bartholomew

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In this enthralling debut, psychiatrist Dr. Leo Liebenstein sets off to find his wife, Rema, who he believes has been replaced by a simulacrum. Also missing is one of Leo's patients, Harvey, who is convinced he receives coded messages (via Page Six in the New York Post) from the Royal Academy of Meteorology to control the weather. At Rema's urging, Leo pretends during his sessions with Harvey to be a Royal Academy agent (she thinks the fib could help break through to Harvey), and once Re- ma and Leo disappear, Leo turns to actual Royal Academy member Tzvi Gal-Chen's meteorological work to guide him in his search for his wife. Leo's quest takes him through Buenos Aires and Patagonia, and as he becomes increasingly delusional and erratic, Galchen adeptly reveals the actual situation to readers, including Rema's anguish and anger at her husband. Leo's devotion to the real Rema is heartbreaking and maddening; he cannot see that the woman he seeks has been with him all along. Don't be surprised if this gives you a Crying of Lot 49 nostalgia hit. (June)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* We often use weather to describe ourselves: she has a sunny disposition; he is rather chilly. But for Galchen, meteorological metaphors are veritable wormholes into the unconscious. In her funny, sad, and ingenious first novel, New York psychiatrist Leo keeps his patient, Harvey, who believes that he is a special agent for the Royal Academy of Meteorologists, grounded by claiming that he, too, works for the meteorologists. For verisimilitude’s sake, Leo says his contact is Tzvi Gal-Chen, an actual member of the actual academy. Harvey improves, but Leo becomes increasingly bewildered. It seems that Rema, his enigmatic Argentine wife, has disappeared and a simulacrum has taken her place. Perhaps Gal-Chen’s work with Doppler weather radar can help, or is Leo thinking of the doppelgänger effect? As her unmoored analyst searches for Rema in Argentina, Galchen––a Borgesian writer armed with a medical degree and a Rona Jaffe Foundation Award and intent on a rapprochement between art and science––pays poetic tribute to her late father, the real-life meteorologist Tzvi Gal-Chen, and considers our myriad “errors of interpretation.” Witty, tender, and conceptually dazzling, Galchen’s metaphysical tale of longing, grief, love, and the volatility of the self gracefully charts the tempestuous weather of the human psyche. --Donna Seaman

Ingenious but tedious
By Anna Karenina
As much as this book is ingenious, clever, unique, poetic, and philosophical, I regret to say that it's tedious. There is simply no momentum, after the first 25 pages. The relationships have no plausibility. There is not enough plot, not enough real life. The main character does not "read" believably as a middle aged man. His mental life does not hang together as a genuine possibility. Events don't seem real. While reading I keep feeling like I was counting grains of sand, or sifting through cookie crumbs, or maybe sinking in quick sand. Although the amusing, clever gems kept coming, the novel didn't create a palpable world I could enter into.

Neither atmospheric nor disturbing
By mojosmom
While browsing the "New Books" shelf at my library, I picked up this book, which begins: "Last December a woman entered my apartment who looked exactly like my wife." Intrigued, I stood and read the first couple of pages and thought, "I must read this". Sadly, I have to report that the book does not live up to its promise.

When the protagonist, New York psychiatrist Leo Liebenstein, arrives at this conclusion, he is also dealing with a patient, Harvey, who believes that he is receiving secret orders from the Royal Academy of Meteorology in controlling the world's weather. Leo's "false" wife, Rema, whom he refers to as "the simulacrum", suggests that he pretend to be an agent of the RAM as well, transmitting directions from a meteorologist named Tsvi Gal-Chen. The relationship between this therapeutic fraud and Leo's search for the real Rema are the crux of Galchen's book.

Now, am I right? Those plots, and their intertwining, ought to make for good reading. But Galchen's prose is so dense and convoluted that it was hard to get through the book, much less enjoy it. I don't mind that it's never clear whether Liebenstein is himself suffering from mental illness (some reviews firmly state that he is suffering from Capgras Syndrome, though Galchen is never definite) or whether Rema really has been replaced by a fake. Nor do I mind that it's unclear whether the RAM really is trying to stop a cabal of errant meteorologists. What I do mind is that Galchen never makes me care about the outcome or her characters, so at the end (which is very unsatisfying, by the way) I just felt as though my struggle to finish had been a waste of time.

The fact that Galchen uses her own surname, names a person called "Tsvi" in the acknowledgements, and, as one discovers with a bit of research, has used parts of her father's work and history in her book, could have given the novel extra depth, but in Galchen's hands seem merely self-indulgent.

Give it a miss.

Unbelievable, dull, sad and unengaging
By Christopher Enzi
I never believed that the narrator's voice belonged to a middle aged man. His behavior is inexplicable without raising my curiosity. Many pieces of the story go oon for several chapters then peter out. Many favorites' names are mentioned to sell this book- however: "Vertigo" is engaging and beautiful. Charlie Kauffman writes funny pieces bristling with empathy. Borges rarely wrote anything longer than ten pages because he wanted his stories to be perfect. Rivka Galchen's promoters are over reaching to imagine that any reader will find corollaries to these masterpieces in her prose. It's too melancholy, too long, wretchedly impersonal and eventually just dull. I gave up after 200 pages. It's a big disappointment.
