good presents for kids (and nostalgic adults ...)

Women in my life complain "boys are hard to buy presents for" - well, here is an idea (and it is non-electronic).
This series is recommended for fans of Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld / Harry Porter/ Perry Jackson / Lord of the Rings / Diana Wynne Jones books, but particularly boys. Content is not too gory, but these are titled "fighting fantasy" books for a reason. Similarly, the reading age is probably 8+ years, but I am no expert.
The random element of encounters throughout the books is what stands out for me - "re-playability". You choose if the protagonist goes left or right, etc. However, even if you pick the same options twice, you probably will not get exactly the same result if you are unlucky.
I am tried of giving kids electronics and want them to learn that reading can be fun (yes - I am my becoming my grandparents), so I will be trying these books out on them - it worked for me.

Fun

Need a little D&D fix but no one to play with? This book will help.
The best thing is it's small and easy to carry with no parts to lose. Bring it to Grandma's, or on that stupid camping trip.
You can use an already made character or make your own.
Battle monsters, figure out traps, and find the warlock's therasure.
Try it it's fun!

Still Awesome After All These Years

Still one of the classics amongst the Fighting Fantasy series, it's lovely to see this reprinted for modern readers (or us older readers who couldn't afford the books as kids!).
Warlock of Firetop Mountain is still a fun and interesting read (or play?) and boy does it bring back the memories. Whether it makes you nostalgic for the original books, or just all those times spent playing tabletop RPGs as a kid, the experience is quite warm and fuzzy.
The writing is not going to win any literary prizes, but it's a classic plot and the gameplay remains simple and fun. There's loads of variety in monsters and NPC interactions, the map is interesting without being too simplistic, and it's challenging without causing your character to just die over and over again. I actually completed the book on my second run through, which for some reason just felt really good (I think it let me explore the majority of the map, but without it getting repetitive).
You can have a great time with this book, or introduce it to your kids to share the experience. The only downside is it doesn't have much to offer if you're an adult who is completely uninterested in RPGs.
